Msgr. John Augustine Ryan (1869-1945) is renowned for drawing from both theology and economics to find solutions to social issues. He advocated a number of social changes including a minimum wage, unemployment insurance, social security, public housing, child labor restrictions, and women's rights in the workplace. This volume is a collection of many of the papers presented at a September 1995 conference held in St. Paul, Minnesota to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his death. Contributors include scholars from India, Europe and the U.S. Twenty-four papers are grouped into an introduction followed by sections on Ryan's work on development in Catholic economic ethics, the business implications of his thoughts and beliefs, his concerns about public policy, and the relationship between spirituality and work. No subject index.
