Editorial Reviews

Charles E. Winquist
An excellent introduction to the study of world religions... The student is introduced to the meaning of religion in the modern and postmodern context.
Bill Parsons
Essential reading for anyone who wishes to be up-to-date with major religious traditions in the modern era .
Brian Wilson
Combines the results of the latest sociological and phenomenological methods from noted scholars and takes seriously the impact of modernity and globalization on religion.... It will be used profitably in introductory courses on world religions but also by students and scholars looking for new directions in comparative religion. This is indeed a textbook for the 21st century.
Irving Hexham
At last an introduction to Religious Studies that is not a clone of 1960s textbooks. Finally we have something written for the 21st century.
Library Journal
The editors, all from the religious studies department of Lancaster University, have created an excellent textbook on contemporary religions and spiritualities. Although designed for undergraduate students, the work contains newly synthesized material that will interest both advanced students and the reading public. The text explores the engagement of religion with the contemporary world and the challenges of modernity. Parts 1 and 2 feature separate chapters on various Asian and Western religions, covering sources and resources, interactions with modernity, prospects for the future, a summary, key terms, and further reading. The most interesting chapters are those in Part 3 ("Themes and Trends"), which broach such subjects as secularization, globalization, politics, gender, and the move from religion to spirituality. Few works synthesize contemporary religious trends the way this volume does, but the World Christian Encyclopedia (Oxford Univ., 2001) and Moojan Momen's The Phenomenon of Religion (Oneworld, 1998) have contributed. The one drawback here is the failure to cover the Baha'i religion. Recommended for all public and academic libraries. William P. This is an important work that should have a significant effect on debates as to how we go about studying religion and why it is worth studying.' - Journal of Beliefs and Values

'... this book is an excellent addition to the range of volumes available for introducing students to the world's religions. It overcomes many of the now questionable assumptions of existing texts in the area and can profitably be adopted to replace them.' - Journal of Contemporary Religion
