Religiosität für das psychische Befinden des Menschen hat, beschäftigt die theoretische und empirische Psychologie seit ihren Anfängen bis in die Gegenwart" (Murken, 1998, S.205). Dieser Satz von Murken beschreibt den grund-legenden Themenbezug dieser Arbeit, nämlich die Frage nach der Bedeutung von Religion bzw. Religiosität für das psychische Befinden des Menschen. In dieser Arbeit werden anhand wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse, basierend auf einer analytischen „Grundlagenforschung", die zentralen Auswirkungen von Religion bzw. Religiosität auf die Erfahrungs- und Lebenswelt von Gläubigen sowie religiösen Anhängern aufgezeigt.
Ausgangspunkt bildet im ersten Kapitel eine Betrachtung der Effekte von Religion auf das menschliche Individuum. Dabei wird untersucht, wie sich Religion positiv als auch negativ auf die allgemeine psychische Gesundheit des Menschen auswirken kann. Anschließend wird in Kapitel zwei der Einfluss von Religion auf die Persönlichkeit bzw. die Persönlichkeitsent-wicklung des Individuums analysiert. In diesem Kapitel werden wiederum die positiven und negativen Auswirkungen von religionsbasierenden Einflüssen verdeutlicht. Im dritten Kapitel wird die Fragestellung untersucht, inwiefern und in welcher Weise die Zugehörigkeit zu spiri-tuellen Gruppen die menschliche Psyche beeinflusst.
