Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-Immigration focuses on the Industrial Revolution and the changes it brought to America, including the rise and growth of factory cities and towns, child labor, and the use of immigrant workers to build the railroads. While the writing is generally clear and accurate, it is occasionally oversimplified, as in the case of the Molly Maguires. Some terms, such as "trade unions," lack sufficient explanation. Thornton's book would be more aptly subtitled Russian Jewish Immigrants Come to America (1881-1914). It discusses why Jews left Russia, the journey to the U.S., and their lifestyles after they arrived. The anti-Semitism they suffered in Russia is described, but no mention is made of the rising anti-Semitism in the U.S. after 1880. Songwriter Cole Porter is incorrectly identified as being of Russian-Jewish descent. In both books, the layouts feature a page of text opposite one or more pictures, often lithographs and black-and-white or sepia-toned photographs. Some seem purely decorative; others beg for more description, such as the one on the cover of Religious Intolerance. Still others are so small that details are indecipherable. Busy decorative borders in rusts and greens contribute to a cluttered feeling. Consider these titles only if material at this level is a priority.-Diane S.
