Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) was a famous Dutch painter who used unconventional techniques for his era. He used shading and light to show action in his work, painted people exactly as they looked, and arranged his subjects in interesting groupings. Rembrandt was famous during his lifetime, creating over 2000 paintings, etchings, and drawings. Each page of the concise text is accompanied by photographs of the artist's work, making it simple for young readers to get acquainted with Rembrandt. It is part of the "Masterpieces: Artists and Their Work" series. The book contains a table of contents, index, timeline, glossary, and internet sites. 2004, Bridgestone Books, Ages 8 to 12.

School Library Journal
Gr 2-4-Well-designed, small-format introductory biographies. The simple, direct texts cover the artists' early childhoods, training, influences, work, and legacies. Each spread has a captioned color reproduction. For the most part, the illustrations are clear and large enough to examine easily. Hoena describes how Cassatt overcame prejudice against women artists, her European travels, and her association with the Impressionists. Niz focuses on Rembrandt's use of light and shadow and discusses his innovative etchings. Sturm describes Matisse's different styles. These titles are comparable to those in Mike Venezia's "Getting to Know the World's Greatest Artists" series (Children's), but they are a bit more text heavy. Although the books do not explain specific paintings in detail, they would work well alongside the "Art for Children" series (Stewart, Tabori, and Chang).-Erlene Bishop Killeen, Fox Prairie Elementary School, Stoughton, WI Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
