A tinge of the supernatural flavors the latest entry from our leading practitioner of the damsel-in-distress school of suspense. Just what is the mysterious presence that seems to haunt Menley Nichols and baby Hannah in their spectacular rented Cape Cod mansion? Menley is still trying to recover from the horror of her two-year-old son Bobby's death on the railroad crossing. Lawyer husband Adam is too busy dashing to and from New York, and defending a local hunk suspected of doing away with his wealthy bride, to be much help. And so the presence moves in on Menley, Rebecca style, with eerie middle-of-the-night sound effects and rocking cradles. As always with Clark, there are several plots going on at once, which are miraculously blended and resolved in the finale; people to watch out for here include a pretty waitress in a local inn and a real estate lady who is an old flame of Adam's. Clark opens herself to charges of excessive authorial legerdemain by employing many narrative points of view, including those of at least two guilty parties without ever offering a clue as to their guilt, but that's a quibble. The denouement is reasonably pulse-pounding, if a little strained. Biography

The Queen of Suspense, Bronx-born and -bred Mary Higgins Clark has achieved international success against heavy odds. Her father died when she was 11, and her mother struggled to raise and provide for Mary and her two brothers. Clark attended secretarial school after high school and worked for three years in an advertising agency before leaving to become a stewardess for Pan American Airlines. Throughout 1949, she flew international flights to Europe, Africa, and Asia. " I was in a revolution in Syria and on the last flight into Czechoslovakia before the Iron Curtain went down," she recalls. In 1950, she quit her job to marry Warren Clark, a neighbor nine years her senior whom she had known and admired since she was 16.

In the early years of her marriage, Clark began writing short stories, making her first sale in 1956 to Extension Magazine. Between writing and raising a family, the decade flew by. Then, in 1964, Warren Clark suffered a fatal heart attack, leaving his young widow with five children to support. She went to work writing radio scripts; and, around this time, she decided to try her hand at writing books. Inspired by a radio series she was working on, she drafted a biographical novel about George Washington. It was published in 1969 under the title Aspire to the Heavens. (In 2002, it was re-issued as Mount Vernon Love Story.) Her first suspense novel, Where Are the Children?, appeared in print in 1975. It was a huge hit and marked a turning point in her life. Since then, she has developed a loyal fan base, and each of her novels has hit the bestseller lists. She has also co-written stories and novels with her daughter Carol, a successful author in her own right.

In the 1970s, Clark enrolled in Fordham University at Lincoln Center, graduating summa cum laude in 1979. A great supporter of education, she has served as a trustee of her alma mater and Providence College and holds numerous honorary degrees. She remains active in Catholic affairs and has been honored with many awards. Her publisher, Simon & Schuster, funds an annual award in her name to be given to authors of suspense fiction writing in the Mary Higgins Clark tradition.

By 9 P.M. the storm had broken with full force, and a stiff wind was sending powerful waves crashing against the eastern shore of Cape Cod. We're going to get more than a touch of the nor'easter, Menley thought as she reached over the sink to close the window. It might actually be fun, she thought, in an effort to reassure herself. The Cape airports were closed, so Adam had rented a car to drive from Boston. He should be home soon. There was plenty of food on hand. She had stocked up on candles, just in case the electricity went out, although if she was right about what she was beginning to suspect, the thought of being in this house with only candlelight was frightening.

She switched on the radio, twisted the dial and found the Chatham station that played forties music. She raised an eyebrow in surprise as the Benny Goodman orchestra went into the opening notes of "Remember."

A particularly appropriate song when you're living in a place called Remember House, she thought. Pushing aside the inclination to flip the dial again, she picked up a serrated knife and began to slice tomatoes for a salad. When he phoned, Adam told her he hadn't had time to eat. "But you forgot to remember," the vocalist warbled.

The unique sound that the wind made when it rushed past the house was starting again. Perched high on the embankment over the churning water, the house became a kind of bellows in a wind storm, and the whooshing sound it emitted had the effect of a distant voice calling out "Remember, Remember..." The legend was that over the decades that peculiarity had given the house its name.

Menley shivered as she reached for the celery. Adam will be here soon, she promised herself. He'd have a glass of wine while she made some pasta.

There was a sudden noise. What was that? Had a door blown open? Or a window? Something was wrong.

She snapped off the radio. The baby! Was she crying? Was that a cry or a muffed, gagging sound? Menley hurried to the counter, grabbed the monitor and held it to her ear. Another choking gasp and then nothing. The baby was choking!

She rushed from the kitchen into the foyer, toward the staircase. The delicate fan-shaped window over the front door sent gray and purple shadows along the wide-plank floor.

Her feet barely touched the stairs as she raced to the second floor and down the hall. An instant later she was at the door of the nursery. There was no sound coming from the crib. "Hannah, Hannah," she cried.

Hannah was lying on her stomach, her arms outstretched, her body motionless. Frantically, Menley leaned down, turning the baby as she picked her up. Then her eyes widened in horror.

The china head of an antique doll rested against her hand. A painted face stared back at her.

Menley tried to scream, but no sound came from her lips. And then from behind her a voice whispered,

"I'm sorry, Menley. It's all over."

    My Absolute Fave

    I love Mary Higgins Clark's books, and have read them all. However, Remember Me stands out as my absolute personal favorite. It has all my favorite things: the ocean, local legends, history, and of course, a great plot! I've read it countless times and I never get tired of it. I also like it that the author always interweaves faith somehow, and never resorts to filthy language or gratuitous sex. Terrific job!

    Engaging and intriguing. A very good story with an extremely suspenseful ending that will keep you on edge until the last page. Recommended reading for all Mary Higgins Clark fans.

    rock-a-by baby...

    this is the first book i read from clark and it's a highly recommended specially if you're into suspense and mind-boggling mystery. at first few chapters it's really confusing and quite boring specially those times wherein you have to keep track of the characters and how, maybe, they'll be a very important person on the plot (and later on learn they were). what i really like on this story is the twist and of course the unknowing climax till ending of the story.

    Remember Me

    This was the first Mary Higgins Clark book I had ever read. I was skeptical at first but since then I have re-read it at least a dozen times and moved on to other titles by the author. This book is without a doubt my favorite book of all time!

    COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN!!

    This book has got to be the best mystery book I have ever read!! I couldn't put it down. I kept telling myself, 'Ok one more chapter and I'll go to bed.' But I kept on reading! I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a great mystery.

    great book

    this was the first mary higgins clark book i read and it wus really good. it wus really interesting. i dont lyk the way how u can never tell who is the murderer though. but, i guess its ur prize for readin ill the end. it reminded me A LOT of the scott peterson trail which is really scary cuz the guys name is scott too. menly wus a little scary and i felt bad for adam. overall ti wus good. and scary and suspensful.

    Captivating

    This is one of my favorite Mary Higgins Clark's novel. This book was never dull and even though I have read it numerous times, will read again. Great mystery and definite page turner. Definitely, the best of MHC.

    Great Book!

    dont like the ending

    Highly Recommended

    I enjoy all her books.I have never been disappointed.I have my daughter reading her and she enjoys her books also. Once I start to read a Mary Higgens Clark book I don't put it down until I finish it.You never know until the end who did it.Wish she had more newer books that I haven't read .

    Awesome Book!!

    I enjoyed reading this book very much!! The story line is awesome, and I actually felt like I knew the people involved. Mrs. Clark has produced another great book!! A must read!!

    BORING!!!!

    I love Mary Higgins Clark but this was the worst book of her's I have read. It took me to read three quarters of the book then the last 20 pages something happened . Wasn't worth my time.

    A GREAT BOOK!!!!

    This was a great book! The plot was typical of a Clark book and i thought it had a really good story line. The timeless question of insanity was mentioned in the book making it a great suspense tale that will send shivers up your spine.

    Best book I have ever read! Read it!

    I thought I had read some pretty good books before but this book is by far the best book I have EVER read! Don't let the number of pages make you not want to read it, all the pages are worth reading! Trust me, you won't waste your time on this book! The setting just makes you want to be there, and yet the parts can get so odd & confusing, but all pretty cool. So read the book!!!

I read one of her books earlier in the year for school and i enjoyed it so i thought i might like this one also i was right. there was one point in time i had to set the book done to go do something i came back and turned on the tv thinking i had been watching a tv show when i started flipping through the channels and saw my book next to me and realized i had felt like i was watching it since it had some much details that made you feel like you were there. this book is about a mother who a few years back went over train tracks and the train hit her car killing her son. now its i think 5 years later and she has a daughter and is having flash backs which are causing her to almost reject her daughter so her husband brings her to the cape where he grew up but it ends up that wasn't the best idea. someone is trying something that could cause alot of grief. its a great book you need, no MUST read it.

    This Story Rocks!!!

    I've read this three times and I'm not tired of it. It's that great!!
