Overview

It's 1971, and racial tension is threatening the popular institution of high school football in Alexandria, Virginia. Into the fray comes newly hired head coach Herman Boone (Denzel Washington), who attempts to save the day and have his charges pull together for a real up-with-people finale. While the film tracks Boone's actions, you get to bask in the familiar, period-specific songs found on the soundtrack, which includes inspirational numbers from Cat Stevens ("Peace Train") and Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, who duet on the inevitable "Ain't No Mountain High Enough." Also reflecting the feel of the times are early-'70s staples from the Hollies ("Long Cool Woman [in a Black Dress]"), Eric Burdon & War ("Spill the Wine"), Norman Greenbaum ("Spirit in the Sky"), and Steam ("Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye"). With unexpected highlights such as Ike and Tina Turner's cover of "I Want to Take You Higher" and Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band's ultra-funky "Express Yourself," this album is the feel-good equivalent of a time machine set to 1971.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Heather Phares
The original soundtrack to the civil rights/football drama Remember the Titans features classic rock, pop, and soul hits like Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky," and Buck Owens' "Act Naturally." Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band's "Express Yourself," Eric Burdon & War's "Spill the Wine," and Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Up Around the Bend" are some of the other high points from this rousing collection, which complements the film's tale of a recently integrated high school football team in the early '70s.
