Overview

"Remembering Martin Luther King, Jr. dramatically depicts the odyssey of this great man. Gathering together the most important photographs taken of Dr. King, the book focuses not just on the action in the street but on the man - the thoughtful minister, the loving father and husband, the gentle but forceful advocate for peace through nonviolent protest. In this book, we come to know this public servant, and understand his dream." Several of these pictures are famous, and some of them changed history. Many historical events and epochs have been captured well by the camera, but few have been rendered so evocatively, and at times so heartwrenchingly, as the Civil Rights movement. The pride is palpable in the pictures of stoic marchers making their way through Alabama, King at their head. And we are still shocked, all these years later, when hoses and dogs are trained on the protesters in Birmingham. The photography of the time, much of which first appeared in the pages of LIFE magazine, was crucial in changing the country's opinions on race, and one of the crusading photographers was Bob Adelman, whose own portfolio is at the core of this book. Telling an equally dramatic tale is the word-portrait of Charles Johnson, who eloquently recalls the era, and brings to life the man.
