Overview

Remodelista.com is the go-to, undisputed authority for home design enthusiasts, remodelers, architects, and designers. Unlike sites that cater to all tastes, Remodelista has a singular and clearly defined aesthetic: classic pieces trump designs that are trendy and transient, and well-edited spaces take precedence over cluttered environments. High and low mix seamlessly here, and getting the look need not be expensive (think Design Within Reach meets Ikea). Remodelista decodes the secrets to achieving this aesthetic, with in-depth tours and lessons from 12 enviable homes; a recipe-like breakdown of the hardest-working kitchens and baths; dozens of do-it-yourself projects; “The Remodelista 100,” a guide to the best everyday household objects; and an in-depth look at the ins and outs of the remodeling process. In a world of design confusion, Remodelista takes the guesswork out of the process.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Remodeling shouldn't be a headache; thanks to this book, it can be an opportunity. Like the website from which it derives its title, Remodelista starts with a simply stated design philosophy: classic, not trendy; clarity, not clutter. Julie Carlson, the co-founder of the site, incites creativity by example, walking readers through twelve houses that "work" and pinpointing what makes them achieve that synchronicity of style. This hardcover's money-saving round-up of a dozen do-it-yourself projects and its guide to the one hundred best everyday household objects give it a hands-on practicality that some other remodeling books and most other websites lack.

Martha Stewart Living

“With her artful marriage of style and practicality, Carlson shows us how to save money and space—and when it’s okay to splurge.” —Martha Stewart Living

The New York Times

“A lovely and extremely useful portfolio of houses, rooms and products, which will no doubt serve as an inspiration and as a source book for would-be redecorators and remodelers. . . . Terrific.” —The New York Times

The Wall Street Journal

"Ms. Carlson's book translates [Remodelista.com's] credo to print, showcasing relatable dwellings and decoding how they work. It's not stingy with practical advice, from how to deal with a contractor to strategies for sprucing up a rental. Some of the best, most heretical wisdom is found in the kitchens section."

Carlson, founder and editor in chief of the interior design and home remodeling website Remodelista.com, visits 12 homes that exemplify her signature style, which is light filled and uncluttered, containing a mix of modern furnishings and vintage finds. The book also takes a closer look at an additional nine kitchens and five bathrooms. These 26 residences—none of which have appeared on the website and are located primarily in California, New York, and London—are shown in close to 500 color photographs. The author provides simple design projects, storage ideas, and a list of 100 Remodelista-recommended everyday items such as lamps, dinnerware, glassware, cookware, and linens. A guide to remodeling offers practical information on handling budgets and contracts and straightforward advice from professionals, while a list of resources completes this comprehensive volume. VERDICT An excellent source of inspiration for those interested in renovating their house or just revamping a room.
