Children's Literature - Ellen Welty
Rena and Rio are friends on their way to the candy store. They are making up rhymes as they go. Rena is explaining to Rio the various types of rhyming patterns in poetry; arriving at their destination, the candy store owner gets involved in the literary discussion, too. Part of the "Poetry Builders" series, this book attempts to teach a fairly complex writing lesson using 10-year-old Rena and candy store owner Manny as the very improbable teachers. Disguising a lesson as a story is not a new concept but it is often unsuccessful, as it is here. Good stories need some conflict or tension, as well as sympathetic characters. This story is really just a lesson that would have been better taught in a more straightforward way. It fails as both a lesson and a story, unfortunately. The illustrations are not bad, but they don't make up for the lack of story. Nice features include some exercises for writing and a list of resources. This is not recommended for classroom collections and only for larger school libraries that have other writing books, too. Reviewer: Ellen Welty
