Meet the Author

Joep van der Steen is formally trained as a civil engineer. He has worked in computer animation and visualization for the past 15 years, devoting recent years to sales and training for 3ds Max and Viz within the Benelux countries. As an extension of his training activities Joep hosts an internet support portal ( with related tutorials and models, and annually teaches a high school level course on the fundamentals of 3ds Max. Joep mastered mental ray rendering by repeatedly throwing himself into its cold deep waters without water wings.
Ted Boardman has been author or co-author of 14 books on 3ds Max which have been sold worldwide in many languages. He is an award-winning 3ds Max trainer specializing in fundamental training techniques and has worked with 3ds Max since its inception.

    Review Rendering with Mental Ray & 3ds Max by Joep van der Steen

    First impression. First I'd like to say I dug in in the book with pleasure and kept interested 'till the last page. Flipping a few pages I started reading in the center of the book, which worked out for me. Starting later at the first chapter still wasn't boring. Some of the images are printed a bit too dark, but since the scene's are on the disc, it is possible to render out the images yourself. It is written in understandable english, as far as that is possible regarding the subject. 'Rendering wih Mental Ray & 3ds Max' perfectly describes the content of this book, it explains what mental ray is, what it can do for you and how you can use mental ray in the production environment effeciently. Basic knowledge of 3ds Max is required, but if you are already expierenced with a 3D application like Maya and like to learn to render with Mental Ray in 3ds Max, this book is the way to learn how to render in 3ds Max with the Mental Ray renderengine aswell. Inside the book. In the first chapters (~10 pages) it explains the general idea of the Mental Ray renderer, which gives an impression (amongst others) of what final gather, photons and ambient occlusion are. In the following chapters these and others are perfectly explained. How they work and even more important, how they should be set up for use in your daily renderwork. At the end of the book you know how to render out quality images minimalising rendertime, regardless if you make photorealistic interior's or contourshaded animations. Is this book right for me? This book is written in such a way, that it is interesting for the following situations: - Every (expierenced) 3ds Max user wich isn't using the Mental Ray renderengine yet - Every Mental Ray user who like to improve his or her knowledge of the Mental Ray renderer - and offcourse everyone else who like to learn about rendering with Mental Ray inside 3ds Max. What does the book for me? It is an easy step to step guide to use as an reference for the experienced Mental Ray user or an easy to read quick learning tool. Joep (the writer) offers a support website, for people who bought the book and have additional questions concerning the book.
