Don't remodel your kitchen without reading this first!

Renovation Bootcamp: Kitchen - Design and Remodel Your Kitchen Without Losing Your Wallet, Your Mind and Your Spouse by Robin Siegerman is a breath of fresh air for anyone wanting to remodel their kitchen! As someone who hopes to remodel her kitchen someday, I have a better understanding of what all goes into a remodel and what to prepare for. There are so many things that Robin talks about in her book that I never would have considered and now that I know about them, I can better prepare and plan. If I jumped into a kitchen remodel, I would have been stuck with extra costs and time added to my project because I simply did not know what all a remodel takes. For instance, Renovation Bootcamp: Kitchen pointed out that apparently I have been living in the dark ages. Did you know that they make microwave drawers? I didn't! As someone with a very small kitchen, I am always being annoyed by the space that my microwave takes up on the counter. Robin suggests that for kitchens with little counter space, to consider using a microwave drawer. They are built underneath the counter as a drawer and are a much better way to manage the space in the kitchen! Robin also talks about topics that we wouldn't normally think of such as clean-up. She points out that once the remodel is complete that you are most likely to be excited to move into your new kitchen and start putting things away. She advises against this and also suggests that you hire a professional cleaning crew to come in and make sure everything has been cleaned properly. I never would have thought to have a crew come in and do the clean-up, just taking it upon myself to clean up afterwards. During the remodel, dust settles on everything and can cause health hazards later on if not properly cleaned. Be sure to clean your new kitchen twice, remembering to clean the vents and air ducts as well to prevent future problems! If you are thinking about a kitchen remodel, I highly recommend you read Renovation Bootcamp: Kitchen - Design and Remodel Your Kitchen Without Losing Your Wallet, Your Mind and Your Spouse by Robin Siegerman before you begin any kitchen remodel projects to avoid extra cost, problems and frustration.

An Excellent Book if You Plan to Renovate Your Kitchen

In reading Renovation Book Camp: Kitchen by Robin Siegerman, I respected the confidence displayed by the author who offers sound, practical advice to those who plan to remodel their kitchens, turning a dream or vision into reality. I was impressed, not only by the information provided, but also by the writing, design and layout of the book. This author is a registered interior designer and a certified kitchen designer whose nineteen years of experience is showcased in this book. She does caution readers not to go by such credentials alone but to check references, personal recommendations, etc. Siegerman places great emphasis on clients being upfront with their chosen designer about their budget and also stresses the importance of properly planning the stages of renovation. Admittedly I was shocked to learn that her clients typically spend $100,000 or more to renovate their kitchens; however, when readers see a breakdown of expenses, this does not seem unreasonable. Also, when one sees the numerous "before" and "after" pictures, they will be truly amazed. If clients only plan to stay in their home a short time, they will want to be more conservative so that it will be easier to sell, but if they plan to stay ten to fifteen years, they should reflect their tastes whether that means loud colors and unique designs that have others looking at the kitchen with amazement and probably envy. Siegerman reminds readers that the kitchen is a room where many activities occur. Besides the obvious ones of eating and perhaps entertaining, many important decisions are made around the kitchen table which is also convenient for doing paper work. Decide the style of kitchen you want-modern, transit, contemporary, traditional-and go for it! Readers will be interested in the sample time schedule of 34 days for the remodeling of their kitchens. This is invaluable in summarizing exactly what needs to be done on a day-to-day basis (Monday through Friday) to complete the project. But this data comes with a warning that unexpected problems often arise that can alter this schedule such as delay in the arrival of materials, etc. The detailed information offered to readers is second to none and makes this book a real winner. If you plan to remodel your kitchen, this is a "must-have" book-one that I highly recommend.
