Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Billed as an update of the 1991 second edition, this edition is prepared by the same editors and follows the earlier format. A classic in the first edition, a masterpiece in the second, this work is the last word in renovationLitchfield is cited again and again by other authors in this field, and rightly soand the new edition will serve to introduce a whole new crop of renovators to the art. In nearly 600 pages of text, accompanied by 1000 illustrations, all systems used in the home are covered in detail, and with sensitivity for a nontechnical reader. If you are renovating a home or even thinking about it, this is the place to start. Essential, but only for libraries that don't already own either edition.Alexander Hartmann, INFOPHILE, Williamsport, Pa.
Library Journal
Home renovation is a major project not for the faint of heart, and this thorough guidebook can help you do it. Litchfield (Encyclopedia of Home Improvement) has thoroughly revised the 1990 second edition and given it a fresh, new look. The layout and organization appear more professional, the text has been tightly edited to make it more fluent, and the photographs and illustrations have been updated. Most important, however, the book's coverage remains complete, from basement to roof and all systems in between. Now in its more accessible format, this definitive guide on the subject is highly recommended for all collections. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

    Must Have Renovation Tool

Not a long endorsement, but to say that this book is phenomenal and has been a godsend over the past four (4) years as my wife and I gutted and completely rebuilt the insides of a wonderful old home that had been terribly neglected.

How to Start, Where to Start, and Why????

If you've an inclination to tear that old worn carpeting up in search of parquet flooring, read this first. The author will give you timeframes in which that kind would have been installed, what type of fastening, does the subfloor need shored up or are the joists in need of sistering, when is it time to replace a subfloor, etc. etc. etc. If you need an EXHAUSTIVE guide on how-to, this is it.
