Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Dale W. Davenport, BS, MHSA (Creighton University Medical Center)
Description: This book focuses on strategies for healthcare leaders to consider in transforming their organizations in response to the rapidly changing healthcare environment.
Purpose: It provides a practical planning framework for managing the restructuring process. The author focuses on the human aspects of dealing with organizational change.
Audience: This is a very timely subject for mid-level to senior managers of institutionally-based healthcare organizations.
Features: The book is well-organized and the cover layout effectively grasps the reader's attention and clearly conveys the subject matter. The text contains few illustrations and uses organizational models to provide a simplified view of complex organizational issues.
Assessment: The author provides effective strategies in dealing with the most critical and overlooked aspects of change — post-reorganization and renewal. He outlines approaches to reestablishing organizational unity, rebuilding employee loyalty, and regenerating community support. He stays focused on how to deal with the humanistic aspects of change. I felt the author could have provided more in-depth discussion when reviewing the various organizational models to be considered during the restructuring process. A case method presentation for this section may have been useful. Overall, the book should serve as a ready reference for healthcare executives, and provides very useful ideas to help manage the change process. I would recommend it as a staple addition to the libraries of today's healthcare executives.
