Pretty boring and the author seems completely unemotional and removed from the whole situation. Also, you'd think a writer would know it's "all told" and "funeral rites" and not "all tolled" and "funeral rights". Did no one proofread this book?

I read this after losing my son. For many it may be an interesting glimpse in the life of families after tragedy. Some of the viewpoints of the author are interesting as it is her take on events, but a little off from a parents viewpoint. I think the severed relationshp with her Dad came about when he was no longer able to interact with her differently (the ball incident). I wonder how this same story might have played out in recent times.
I actually felt more sympathy for the father (he wasn't even allowed to diaplay pictures of his other daughter in the living room openly). If I were a parent that was not allowed to show love openly for a deceased child, I could imagine it might be harder to interact with a new child (like everything is supposed to suddenly be ok when a new child comes along and the lost child didn't exist?). Especially when the Mom was dressing and cutting her hair like the lost daughter. Parents grieve differently and this is a cautionary tale. The father did love his daughter- he showed it by his concern... so much of his efforts seemed misinterperted in this book and it is really a bit sad.
It is also a view on having a subsequent versus a replacement child, and will make you think. It certainly made me evaluate my desire for another child, and while it hasn't changed, I go into this with my eyes opened a bit wider.
So while I would not rate this as great literature, it is worth spending a few days reading, if nothing else to give people an idea that after they think the family should be ok after losing a child, they will never be the same... just different. Like the author's mother, it really does define you to a large degree.

a sensitive topic nicely done made me wonder how often this happens can you replace a child? how does that child feel growing up in the shadows of another while trying to find there own place in the world

A families painful history can effect you long after the moment of impact.
This story broke my heart and shook me to my core. What if? What if something like this happened to my family? Could I go on? I have my doubts, but reading this story highlighted the fact for me that people do...all the time.
This book captivated me. I couldn't put it down and even googled the plane crash after I was finished.

Overview
Replacement Child erupts with a tragic plane crash, an impossible choice for a mother, and the heartbreaking injury of a two-year-old. When one child dies, the hole left in the family threatens to tear it apart. In a leap of hope, the replacement child is born to be what she calls “a salve for the burns.” She plays this role unwittingly throughout her childhood, suffering the hidden aftermath of the family tragedy. She becomes her mother’s salvation, but her father’s regret. In writing this powerful and inspirational story, she gains a deeper understanding of herself and her life. Not until she has a child of her own does she begin to understand the wisdom behind her family mantra: anything can happen, planes fall from ...
