Meet the Author

I was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, but my family quickly moved to the more suburban Cranford. The town I live in now in Connecticut is nearly a duplicate of my childhood hometown.

In college, I tried several different majors over the course of finding my way. My first was communications, then theater, then I developed a major in playwriting. Finally, I settled on English and Journalism. Having taken a break after my sophomore year to get married, getting my degree part-time took me a while. I worked my way through those last college years singing and playing guitar in coffee shops and clubs.

My writing life began as a reporter, which I actually loved. Then, I added a public relations stint at a hospital, a short time in advertising and somehow found myself in corporate communications at various insurance companies--where I earned a living for 20 years. I had only meant to stay for a few paychecks. More recently, I provide marketing writing for corporate clients in addition to continuing my own writing.

I am blessed with a wonderful son, an equally wonderful husband who brought three fantastic stepsons into my life, and a very large orange cat that sometimes types long lines of zzzzzz's by laying across my computer keyboard.

    Meh.

Pretty boring and the author seems completely unemotional and removed from the whole situation. Also, you'd think a writer would know it's "all told" and "funeral rites" and not "all tolled" and "funeral rights". Did no one proofread this book?

    Interesting read

I read this after losing my son. For many it may be an interesting glimpse in the life of families after tragedy. Some of the viewpoints of the author are interesting as it is her take on events, but a little off from a parents viewpoint. I think the severed relationshp with her Dad came about when he was no longer able to interact with her differently (the ball incident). I wonder how this same story might have played out in recent times.

I actually felt more sympathy for the father (he wasn't even allowed to diaplay pictures of his other daughter in the living room openly). If I were a parent that was not allowed to show love openly for a deceased child, I could imagine it might be harder to interact with a new child (like everything is supposed to suddenly be ok when a new child comes along and the lost child didn't exist?). Especially when the Mom was dressing and cutting her hair like the lost daughter. Parents grieve differently and this is a cautionary tale. The father did love his daughter- he showed it by his concern... so much of his efforts seemed misinterperted in this book and it is really a bit sad.

It is also a view on having a subsequent versus a replacement child, and will make you think. It certainly made me evaluate my desire for another child, and while it hasn't changed, I go into this with my eyes opened a bit wider.

So while I would not rate this as great literature, it is worth spending a few days reading, if nothing else to give people an idea that after they think the family should be ok after losing a child, they will never be the same... just different. Like the author's mother, it really does define you to a large degree.

    Quick, but good read

A families painful history can effect you long after the moment of impact.

This story broke my heart and shook me to my core. What if? What if something like this happened to my family? Could I go on? I have my doubts, but reading this story highlighted the fact for me that people do...all the time.

This book captivated me. I couldn't put it down and even googled the plane crash after I was finished.
