Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
In this book, a part of "The Science of Saving Animals" series, Peggy Thomas does an excellent job of introducing the reader to the world of the reptile. This is not just a book about the life of various reptiles, such as alligators, turtles, and snakes, but it is also about their interactions with humans in such areas as poaching and conservation. This is not a book focusing on one aspect of reptiles. Thomas' book informs the reader regarding the protection and conservation of animals some might consider slimy and scary. She effectively points out the importance that alligators, turtles, snakes, lizards and other reptiles have in our world. She writes about the role of humans in protecting and conserving these creatures. By touching on more than one area within the study and conservation of reptiles, Thomas presents information valuable not only to children, but to some adults as well. There also is a glossary and small list of Internet sources at the back of the book. 2000, Twenty-First Century Books, Ages 9 to 14, $23.90. Reviewer: John D. Orsborn
School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-Conservation programs and education are the focus of these two titles. In both, the author explains the contributions of these animals to the balance of nature and why it is important to save them from extinction. The following chapters discuss what is being done in the areas of wildlife management, tracking, breeding programs, and conservation of habitat to help toward the goal of species preservation. Some of the fascinating projects include tracking the Florida panther and studying its territorial habits, and a wildlife crime lab (National Fish and Wildlife Forensics Laboratory) that analyzes products to see if endangered species were used to produce them. Well-written texts; open, easy-to-read page design; and attractive, good-quality, full-color photographs of wildlife and scientists conducting fieldwork result in useful resources with lots of reader appeal.-Cynthia M. From The Critics
Reptile Rescue succeeds in performing three difficult feats simultaneously: It describes the current threats to reptile conservation, discuses what is being done to remedy the various situations, and offers a personal look at what the rescuers actually do. The author uses a worldwide perspective to recount work being done to protect rattlesnakes in the American west, breed Indonesian Komodo dragons in zoos, and even effect DNA speciation in the exceptionally rare New Zealand tuatara. The information is almost completely accurate; the few small mistakes appear to be caused by trying to state difficult and highly complex problems in a simple, straightforward manner. Physiology, reproductive strategies, predator-prey relationships, and behavior are discussed only briefly in the course of studying the depredations the pet trade, the introduction of alien species, the production of food and consumer goods, and the loss of habitats have wrought on these creatures. Explaining conservation, captive breeding, animal head-start programs, and rehabilitation to elementary-school-age children isn't easy, but this book does a fine job of it. One the best features of the book is the variety it exhibits (in text and through good illustrations) in treating a topic. For example, children learn what a herpetologist does when they interview scientists who are solve problems in the field in a multiplicity of ways. (from the Science Saving Animals Series.) Recommended, Grades 3-6. REVIEWER: Bill Boesenberg (Snakes-n-Scales and Turtle Tales)
