Another winning love story from Diane Gaston!

The hero of A REPUTABLE RAKE, Sloane, is quite a complex character, more so than most romance heroes I've encountered. As a former rake, spy, and smuggler, his entire quest is to become respectable --but not for the reasons you would expect! -- and thus, in the novel, he denies himself the pleasures of Morgana, the heroine, for quite some time. This created a lot of tension for me, but the best kind, the kind where you can't put the book down! Sloane's physical heroism, past exploits, and spy work afford him the means to get needed info about those who are a true danger to Morgana and her 'students'. But Morgana's plans for 'educating' these young women fly squarely in the face of Sloane's plans for respectability and his hoped-for acceptance into the upper echelons of Regency society. Ms. Gaston's characters are ORIGINAL, fresh, and different, even the secondary ones. No one seems like added baggage, unnecessary, etc. In fact, I'd love to see another romance just about Mr Elliot ... he's wonderful! Morgana, our heroine, is quite outspoken and unconventional, but not in the annoying way. I liked her immediately. Ms. Gaston's characters are easily some of the most 'realistic' of any romances I've read. They're beautiful but flawed -- they have very real quirks and foibles, such as we all have. As a result, the reader feels great empathy for them we truly care what will become of them. The love scenes are beautiful they are a bit delayed, due to the plotline constraints... but anything happening any earlier wouldn't have been consistent with the characters' personalities. It was WELL WORTH the wait! And I could feel Morgana's great satisfaction when she is finally able to be with Sloane, whom she loves so much. Enough said... A plot twist at the novel's end is quite brilliant. I had wondered how Sloane could possibly manage to stay with Morgana, without playing the complete cad to Miss Hannah, but the solution was perfect. And I loved David, the nephew. I'd love a book about him, too! This novel is rich and full of beauty -- the characters grow before our eyes, and learn so much more about themselves and about their own motives --some of which aren't the most pure. Morgana, thanks to Sloane, finally comes to believe she is desirable and beautiful. Very satisfying, indeed. A REPUTABLE RAKE is definitely a 'keeper', and I eagerly await the author's next effort.
