Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Crowder
With dramatic or tragic reports of boats sinking, aircraft crashing into the ocean, ferries sinking or boats and ships of all sizes stranded at sea, young readers may not need the “Read Me!” splashed in colorful letters on the cover. This book, part of the “Heroic Jobs” series, begins with a realistic scenario: a fishing boat has broken down amidst high waves and fierce winds, plus a fisherman onboard who is sick—it is time for rescue. According to the author, the range of people who need help is large: ship’s crew, passengers, sailors, divers, surfers, oilrig workers, swimmers, etc. So who are rescuers? People who work on lifeboats, lifeguards who watch out for swimmers or surfers, folks from the Navy, Air Force, and Coast guard. Sometimes they fly search planes or helicopters. Sometime they pilot rescue boats. Sometimes they jump or are lowered into treacherous waves. The book features dramatic photo illustrations of all these and more. Part of the book’s lively format is a yellow “Did you know?’ icon on most two-page spreads. These offer additional information, for instance, did you know that in the world’s oceans some waves can reach one hundred feet, as tall as a ten-story building? The book also provides information about rescue equipment, how rescuers train, a handy list of do’s and don’ts (for example, never swim alone, take notice of warning signs, be aware of the tide). The book includes a glossary, books and website for finding out more, plus an index. Reviewer: Judy Crowder; Ages 8 to 12.

Gr 1–3—High-profile disasters meet high-interest jobs. Well-organized texts with short, simple sentences set against white backgrounds ensure easy readability. The on-scene photos are exciting but not violent. Many show specialized equipment, but they are inconsistently captioned. The glossaries provide a confusing selection of vocabulary words, e.g., in Fires, "burn" is defined but "collapse" is not, and some definitions are poorly written, e.g., in Crime, "illegally" is defined as "do something that is against the law." Some volumes include relevant safety tips, though these can be puzzling—Fires suggests checking smoke detectors once a week, which seems excessive (FEMA's website recommends once a month). Though flashy and eye-catching, many flaws weaken this set.
