Rescue: Pop-Up Emergency Vehicles

by Matthew Reinhart

Reinhart's new pop-up series features very simple bright art—young cut-paper collage artwork.  Chunky friendly people drive these accurate, yet simplified cars, trucks and other vehicles saving others from danger—but nothing too severe.  Some vehicles will be viewed from the side, while others will be completely 3D.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lisa Colozza Cocca
A lovely feat of paper engineering, this title explores rescue workers and their vehicles. Occupations covered in this short book include: police officer, lifeguard, helicopter pilot, paramedic, and firefighter. The manipulative qualities of the book include pop-ups, slides, spins, and flaps. Each career choice is presented on a two page spread. On one page, a short paragraph describes the job. On the second page, the author provides a scenario of the rescue worker on the job. The examples are serious in nature, but not frightening. The brief text will be easily understood by pre-school children. The illustrations have sufficient details and the mechanics of the book work well. The book is meant to be manipulated and is inviting enough to assure it will be. Due to the somewhat delicate nature of the pop-ups the individual reader needs to be considered to determine the practicality of the book. The continuous circulation of library books would likely result in a very short shelf life for this title. Reviewer: Lisa Colozza Cocca
