Children's LiteratureAGERANGE: Ages 7 to 10.
Since the first time C. S. Lewis sent the children through the wardrobe to the land of Narnia, readers have been fascinated with what lies on the other side in the hidden worlds of fantasy. Author Temple has created a wonderful story about two young adventurous humans, Kendra and Ari, and their trip to the land of the trolls and the imps. In this delightful story, Ari and Kendra are called upon to help save the rainforest from the fires of the Trolls. Although their guide Trace cannot speak to them audibly except when he is in his village, he communicates with secret messages written in code. When Ari and Kendra try to help protect the rainforest that is on the other side of Ari's bedroom wall, their lives become endangered. Only the imps can save them now. The map and character key at the beginning of the book introduces all of the main characters to the reader. While the story is a delightful tale, the lesson learned is about the beauty of the rain forest and how everyone must help to protect it or it will soon be gone. In this numbered series, "Biome Battles," young readers will visit the biomes of the desert, ocean, prairie, rain forest, tundra, and the wetlands. This series addresses the National English Language Arts: Standard 1. An index, as well as instructions for using the kid-friendly FactHound web site, is included in each title. Reviewer: Joyce Rice
