Editorial Reviews

Booknews
Comparing three different approaches to inquiries in the human and social sciences, Cresswell (U. of Nebraska at Lincoln) looks at the knowledge claims for the approaches and explains the processes of research design and writing. Written to aid students and scholars in preparing proposals for journals or dissertations, the text takes readers through the steps of the process of research, addressing the different approaches of the three methods. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
Alison Scott-Baumann
"The success of mixed methods is particularly noticeable in medical and health-related research: in order to secure funding, it is advisable to incorporate a quantitative element into any such research project, and from the point of view of working with human subjects, most qualitative researchers would argue that a qualitative element is required." —Alison Scott-Baumann, University of Gloucestershire
Organizational Research Methods
"It is both usefully expanded and very reader friendly. The book has a distinctive helpful tone and an almost "how to do it" style. If one liked the first edition, then he or she will probably adore this one."

Meet the Author

I am a Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where I teach courses and write about research design, qualitative methodology, and mixed methods research. I have been at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for 30 years and have authored or co-authored 19 books in original copy and in editions. Most of these books address research methods and methodologies. In addition, I founded the Office of Qualitative and Mixed Methods Research on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus that provided campus support for scholars incorporating qualitative and mixed methods research into projects for extramural funding. I have also held the Clifton Research Endowed Chair at Nebraska.

I served as the founding and Co-Editor for the new Sage journal, the Journal of Mixed Methods Research, and I have been an Adjunct Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Michigan and have been a consultant to the Veterans Affairs Health Science Research Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I was selected to be a Senior Fulbright Scholar and visited South Africa in October, 2008, bringing mixed methods concepts to universities and studying documentaries about AIDS victims and families. In February 2012 I will visit Thailand as a Senior Fulbright Scholar on mixed methods. I play the piano, write short stories, and actively engage in sports.

    Creswell does well

As a professional educator seeking an advanced degree at an advanced age, I have been impressed by Creswell's ability to explain the process of writing a dissertation. The format of the chapters in the book make it easy to use as a template for constructing a dissertation proposal and, ultimately, the dissertation. Well done!

    Save yourself the pain..

I was forced to read this book for a graduate methodology course at Harvard. This is a verbose text on how to write an academically acceptable research paper. It overtly accepts all the suppositions of the academic writing process, many of which are highly debatable, while thoroughly venerating highbrow academia¿s proclivity for political correctness and leftism. Some portions border on the ridiculous and literally outright laughable with respect to how pedantic they are. The only reason this book was written, as he himself notes implicitly at one point, was that someone was going to write it. The simple lack of an authoritative text on graduate research methods begged for someone to hammer out 230+ pages of nonsense. Then again, ¿John W. Creswell is a Professor of Educational Psychology at Teachers College, University of Nebraska-Lincoln,¿ so it not like this pursuit comes as a big surprise. If you find the Chicago Manual of Style to be intriguing and edifying, and / or you are a total tool of the academic system, then this book is for you¿

Good guide to preparing a genuine research paper.

My only reservation is that it is limited unnecessarily to the social sciences. The advice would apply to a broader set of academic disciplines. Lots of good examples.

    Quality ground level research information

This was a text used for one of my doctoral classes. I found this to be one of the best and practical books to explain basics to doctoral research design.
