Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Sandra Lee
High school students looking for another tool to research college life will find this guide very useful. The attractive, "adult" layout and well-rounded information hold strong appeal for teens. The Internet adds a completely new level to researching personal information needs, and guides such as these capture the multitude of dimensions now open to us. In this guide, for example, the author goes beyond the presentation of admissions information and looks at other elements of college preparation. SAT sites, varsity life, colleges historically serving minority students, financial aid, and contacting students via the Web to get inside information are included in addition to the college listings on the Web. This book delivers on a number of reference librarian concerns. While information on the Internet changes too quickly to allow hard copy books much time to remain accurate, this guide will provide basic spring boards to students for a long time. The reality is that many schools are still not online, and even those who enjoy connectivity are unable to teach students proper library and Internet skills. This book-written by a librarian-teaches rudimentary Web skills and search engine/subject directory tips. The Yahoo! page for education would be inadequate for teens who have never surfed the Web and so they do need hard copy guides such as this to get them started. This book provides a step-by-step guide, well suited to its audience, which can be used right at the computer to learn basic WWW skills while finding relevant information for teens. Index. Photos. School Library Journal
Gr 9 UpOne of the most practical guides available. Recognizing that not every teenager is an Internet whiz, Cochrane carefully takes readers through the steps needed to find information on colleges, loans, applications, etc. She begins with a brief introduction to the Web and how to use it, followed by a section on choosing a college. Rather than attempting to cover every site out there, the author gives examples and explains how to look further, thus empowering students to do a personalized search. For every example included, there is at least one accompanying illustration. Each Web site address is listed under the site's heading and is included in the accompanying description as well. Mention is made several times that sites can change and indeed a few have. However, even in a different format the information is still there and accessible. Cochrane also includes a section on how to use search engines such as Yahoo, Magellan, and Metacrawler to continue the college search. Her explanations are clear and easy to follow. Even daily Internet users will learn something here. This book belongs in the hands of all high school students who are thinking about continuing their educations.Jo-Anne Weinberg, Greenburgh Public Library, NY
