Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Alan J Sazama, MD (Regions Hospital and Level 1 Trauma Center)
Description: This case-based guide to many of the common complaints encountered by emergency medicine residents during the course of their training includes emergency department, intensive care unit, EMS, and ultrasound cases. Each chapter includes review questions, diagrams, and detailed, evidence-based information about the cases.
Purpose: The authors aim to provide the basic information needed to help medical students make the transition to new interns with a new set of responsibilities and expectations. This is a worthy objective, as many medical students are anxious about the increase in responsibility associated with being a new resident. Using short, easy-to-read chapters, the book succeeds in providing medical students and residents a good base of knowledge to build upon throughout their training.
Audience: The core audience is fourth-year medical students preparing to begin their residency in emergency medicine. It can serve as a guide for medical students, interns, or upper level residents looking to review basic information.
Features: Through 43 case-based chapters, the book exposes readers to many of the most common complaints encountered by emergency medicine residents. Including ICU, EMS, and ultrasound cases in addition to emergency department cases strengthens the book's relevance for new interns. Despite focusing on specific patient presentations, each chapter describes a thorough differential diagnosis for the complaint and engages readers in the process of sorting through the different potential diagnoses.
Assessment: Short, accessible chapters make it easy for busy medical students or new interns to read up on a common ED complaint in minutes. The book succeeds in exposing medical students and residents to the most common types of patients they will encounter during their training.
