Description: This book is based on a course at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine for students starting their PGY-1 internship year.
Purpose: The purpose is to present numerous case studies from the inpatient and outpatient areas of the more commonly encountered situations and form a diagnostic approach to patients presenting with similar symptoms. This is a valid endeavor as the transition from medical student to resident is easy for some and difficult for others.
Audience: The audience is somewhat small, those moving into their internship class, but there is also great utility for medical students studying for their USMLE examinations.
Features: The chapters are case studies concerning the more common complaints an intern would see in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Each chapter starts with a short vignette followed by a few pertinent questions. The important parts of the chapter are the discussions that follow concerning the case review, the pathophysiology, and the figures that support the explanations. These are very well presented.
Assessment: There are dozens of books such as this on the market. This one does have a slightly different approach, which makes it a valuable addition. The discussions of the case reviews are well done, without unnecessary detail for this type of presentation. The book is concise and easy to read and it covers the basics very well.
