Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This informative guide focuses on different aspects of resilience and a person's ability to succeed in the face of misfortune or challenging situations. The author arranges the information into six chapters covering the following important health areas—tobacco, alcohol and other drugs, intentional and unintentional injuries, nutrition, sexual behavior, and exercise and physical activity. Each chapter contains an overview, background information, a self-assessment questionnaire, anecdotes, statistics, quotes, strategies and thought-provoking questions. This resource also contains a list of recommended web sites, addresses, hot lines and books, as well as a glossary and an index. Although the information is timely and useful, the presentation is lacking and not very reader-friendly. Some pages have too much white space, and it seems as though the author tries a little too hard to make the material conform to an ABC format. Today's savvy teenagers need a more eye-catching layout to hold their attention. 2001, LifeMatters Books/Capstone Press, $22.60. Ages 12 up. Reviewer: Debra Briatico
