School Library Journal
Gr 7-9-Marianne, a French 15-year-old, is reluctantly working for the Resistance during World War II. The fear and pressure are getting to be too much for her, and she is angry with her mother for continuing to participate in the movement despite the mounting danger to the family. Marianne promised her father, who died while fighting, that she would care for her deaf brother and keep him from harm. Now a German officer has been billeted with the family, and a sickly British officer is hidden in the woodshed. Marianne never knows who is a fellow Resistance worker and who is colluding with the Nazis. Compounding her escalating terror is the predatory Nazi commanding officer who left one girl in a nearby town pregnant. The taut story line builds tension from the first page. Marianne's confusion and fear are realistically rendered. Yet she is a typical teenager who dreams of being a clothes designer someday, and only wants her family to be safe. This leads her to do something terrible that imperils all of them. Ultimately, she is forced to look beyond the war with its established enemies and allies to see real people and judge them as individuals. With winning characterization and a compelling plot, this quick read will appeal to reluctant readers as well as voracious ones.-Christina Stenson-Carey, Albany Public Library, NY Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
This WWII story, more personal than political, shows one French girl's struggle with the Resistance and the sacrifices and decisions forced on her family. Fifteen-year-old Marianne's father, a soldier killed early in the war, told her to protect her deaf younger brother Michel. However, Michel and Maman insist on risking the family's safety to work with the Resistance. Marianne's life centers on men, including two German officers (one an obvious and repulsive rape threat, another billeted at her house and falling for her) and a sick English soldier hiding in her woodshed. Marianne wants only to quit involvement in the Resistance and be safe; but where is safety during wartime? Graber's portrayal of the war, while moving, remains circumscribed within this village; commitment to the Resistance is motivated individually rather than by a broader sense of the Third Reich's goals and atrocities. Characters and plot are stock but competent. (prologue, epilogue) (Historical fiction. YA)

I purchased this book for my 12 y.o. daughter, who will be trave

I purchased this book for my 12 y.o. daughter, who will be traveling to France this summer and will be visiting Normandy and learning a little about the French Resistance. I wanted her to have a little background before she went, in an age appropriate way. This book was excellent!! Provided just what I wanted -- involvement in the resistance by children and teens in a realistic story.

VERY good story. Engrossing and thought provoking.

I really enjoy this little novel and didn't want it to end! It is the story of the complexities of war from a young girl's perspective added with the complexities of her changing relationship with her mother. Very interesting twists and turns to the plot. All that and an ending that got me all choked up. What more could you ask for!
