"Sing us a new song" says Scripture, and as the praise & worship movement continues to hold Christian music tight in its grasp, one wonders if the industry should take the Psalmist's advice. The best praise & worship music uplifts and even evokes a feeling of awe with its lyrics. As one of the leaders of the modern praise & worship movement, Sonicflood did just that with "I Could Sing of Your Love Forever" and "I Want To Know You" -- both number one hits for the group and now regarded as modern classics. Now after a label change and new lineup following the departure of band leader Jeff Deyo, Sonicflood issues sophomore studio effort RESONATE. This album recreates the stellar musicianship, melodic pop/rock and rich vocal harmonies that first ushered the group onto the scene in 1999. Having launched a movement, Sonicflood is now left with the task of taking it to its next level. RESONATE achieves that to some degree, especially the driving hard rock rhythms that connect nearly all 11 tracks. Opening track "Lord Of The Dance," its Mr. Roboto-like intro notwithstanding, is infectious and danceable; "You Are The Holy One" is mesmerizing with its drum beats and electronic flourishes, while "I Lift My Eyes Up" has a fun, Caribbean lightness, thanks to vocal assistance from Lisa Bevill. But this form of music is distinguished by its lyrics -- these are songs that praise God, after all -- and phrases like "You are my only hope," "You are holy," and "You're all I need" have been overplayed by dozens praise & worship bands. For any musical movement to stay alive it must grow and change; when it appears the same lyrics are being sung to hundreds of different melodies, what we're left with is empty praise, indeed.

I received this CD just a couple of days ago from my best friend for Christmas. She knows how much I love this band. At first I didn't like the album. I guess it's because for once I didn't know the words to a Sonicflood CD. I didn't know any of the words, well, except for Resonate. After listening to it over the past couple days...I like it! I know lots of the words, too, because it's the only CD I have been listening to. And I listen to music all the time, too! If you love the other two Sonicflood CDs, then you'll love this one! If at first you don't like it, do NOT worry. You'll learn to love it. I know I did.
