CONTINUING THE DEFINITIVE SERIES OF CLASSIC MYSTERIES BY AMERICAN MYSTERY AND NERO WOLFE AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR CHARLOTTE MacLEOD

For years, Professor Peter Shandy has been badgered by Jemima Ames, Assistant Librarian and Annual Chairperson, to decorate his campus home for the Grand Illumination which is Balaclava Agricultural College's main fund-raising event. Now he can hold out no longer.

Goaded to madness, he buries his small brick house under an avalanche of plastic reindeer, flashing lights, and fake Santa Clauses. Hooks up an amplifier blaring "All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth," locks the switches at "on," and escapes to sea on a tramp steamer.

Shipwrecked and conscience-stricken, he crawls back to face his irate colleagues, and finds Jemima Ames dead on his living room floor. Police and security guards say it's an accident; Shandy says it's murder. President Thorkjeld Svenson says he'd better find out the truth without wrecking the Illumination...or the next corpse will be Shandy's.

A wonderful cozy mystery. Not very long by today's standards, but well written and well paced. The quirky characters felt very comfortable and relatable, which made keeping track of individuals within the story much easier. It seemed a little odd that Balaclava was considered so forward thinking in that they had the students run the faculty cafeteria to give them real world job experience. This seemed the norm when I started college in '90.

There were a few things that struck me while reading it. 1) Expectations in culture have changed somewhat. Frugality was in, now it's extravagance and over-indulgence. Having one car was understandable necessity; having two was ostentatious. Sugar was a luxury. Packing a single small suitcase for a week long trip. 2) I'd forgotten how varied the vocabulary was. Perspicacious and alacrity are rarely used in today's novels. 3) Everyone drinks and pretty much all the time. Seems they are always having a sherry, or a highball or something. Someone would walk into a room and they'd be offered an adult beverage.

The Open Road eBook was well formatted, though there were a handful of misspellings.

I'm delighted that Charlotte MacLeod's books are now back in print, and available on my Nook! Her books are fun to read, with interesting, quirky characters, and they are well written. Think Jessica Fletcher meets Northern Exposure. My deepest regret is that she is gone now, and so we won't have any additional Peter Shandy or Sarah Kelling stories beyond the current supply.

I truly enjoy Charlotte MacLeod’s books. Her characters are likable and the stories have a quite charm that is captivating. I can’t wait to read the next book in the Peter Shandy and Helen Shandy mysteries.
