Restless Earthby Staff of the Book Division of National Geographic Society
When America's astronauts stood on the moon for the first time and looked back across the void, they watched the earth, serene and silent, rising above the lifeless luna surface. Great swirls of white clouds veiled the familiar shapes of brownish and greenish continents set in blue oceans, with the Antarctic ice sheet the brightest of all. Greenish patches on the continents drew their eyes toward these oases of life on the earth.
But the astronauts knew that their planet is anything but serene or silent. Restless Earth describes how floods overpower human engineering in one part of the world even as droughts take their toll in another.
Restless Earth provides a powerful reminder of the planet's capricious forces and processes, of nature's challenges and humanity's varied and often futile responses.
