    A prime example of why Lovecraft is best in small doses.

    Of the three 'The Wilds' books I have read so far, this one is the worst. Still, it may be worth a look if you like Lovecraftian tales, as this is what the story most feels like. Unfortunately, it was really meant to be a D&D adventure book, and in this regard, it fails. The adventure-like encounters feel like they were forced into the Lovecraftian story just to make this a D&D book. Like a Lovecraft story, it is full of foreshadowing, doom, despair and suspense of the unknown. Unlike most Lovecraft stories, I could not relate to the main characters. Of the four-person adventuring party the story centers around the only character that isn't suffering from post traumatic stress disorder and/or survivor guilt is a secondary character at best. I suppose if I was a war vet I might be able to relate to these characters, but I am not, I am a D&D player and this depressing group of reluctant heroes just doesn't impress me. While I understand that flawed characters usually make the most believable, these characters are too flawed for an adventure tale, and too skilled/powerful for a Lovecraft-style horror story.
    Almost all Lovecraft-style stories can be very depressing and it is for this reason that they make much better short stories and novellas than they do full length novels. One can only take all of the dread foreshadowing for so long before one simply wishes for the story to end and this book is a prime example of that. I wished it to be over a good two-thirds into the book and if it had ended then I might have enjoyed it much more. But it had to keep dragging out the same sense of dread and suspense to a point where much of the book seemed redundant; reaching a climax that I easily predicted a third of the way into the book.
