Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
During a visit to a Chasen Heights construction site, Samantha "Sam" Casey, a suspended Native American cop with psychic powers, "sees" the stabbing of a young woman. Her subsequent sleuthing reopens a 17-year-old, apparently cut-and-dry rape-murder, for which the wrong man is about to be executed. Sam and husband Jake, also a detective, eventually back up her vision with concrete clues, all the while side-stepping intrusive media, disbelieving family, and political maneuverings. An exciting mix of police procedure, spiritual "intuition," creeping suspense, and page-turning narrative, this series (When the Dead Speak) title rates essential. The Chicago-based author also writes the Chase Dagger mysteries as Lee Driver. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

    Another good one

Really enjoy this series. Would love it even more if Abby & Alex had more involvement. I love the Native American way of life and wish the author would bring more of that influene into the stories, maybe have Abbys' character show up more as she is a powerful medicine woman. Any who, love the books and the author. Recommened!

    S.D. TOOLEY'S "RESTLESS SPIRIT"

    S.D. TOOLEY'S "RESTLESS SPIRIT" (REVIEW)

Another fast-paced murder mystery this time employing Native American spiritualism. Samantha Casey is an out-of-work detective with the power of mystic perception. Her ability to see what has passed leads her on a journey to prove the innocence of one man while finding the other truly responsible for the murder of a young woman named Catherine.

S.D. Tooley (aka, Lee Driver), is a wonderful story-teller that keeps you turning the page for more. If you enjoy murder mysteries with a taste of the paranormal and supernatural, this is one author whose books you will love.

    entertaining paranormal investigative tale

On maternity leave, Detective Sergeant Samantha Casey wanders a construction site when she hears a dying female voice with no one but the male foreman in the area. She picks up a button and sees a vision as if a murder mystery is playing on the TV. After consulting with her mother, the only person who believes in her psychic abilities, Sam begins checking the files of her detective husband for brutal fatal stabbing cases in the Briar Woods area of Chasen heights. Sam¿s research leads her to Jimmy Taggert. The convicted murderer sits on death row awaiting state execution for the 1985 brutal murder of Catherine DeMarco. The evidence is so powerful that he has to be the killer yet Sam¿s psychic abilities say otherwise. Unable to rest, Sam visits retired detective Paul Goddard, who led the DeMarco murder investigation seventeen years ago. Paul is an alcoholic struggling with personal problems, but informs Sam that he always felt, but could not prove, that Taggert was too perfect. Reluctantly, Paul agrees to work with Sam though he is very skeptical about her psychic powers but knows this might help ease his conscience. RESTLESS SPIRIT is an entertaining paranormal investigative tale due to the lead character (see WHEN THE DEAD SPEAK for Sam¿s first appearance). The story line is cleverly designed so that readers obtain a taste of the negative reactions of the secondary characters including the victim¿s family, the heroine¿s husband, and even her temporary partner to Sam¿s ¿intrusive¿ sleuthing. Though Paul¿s baggage drags, fans will gain extensive satisfaction from S.D. Tooley¿s tale that reads like Marge Gunderson (Fargo) having psychic abilities. Harriet Klausner

    RESTLESS SPIRIT

Sam Casey, is on temporary leave from her job as a detective sergeant with psychic powers nobody seriously believes in-except for her mother, who also possesses psychic powers but in a different form. Sam's detective husband, Jake, who prefers to do things by the book, shies away from her gift. At a construction site, Sam idly picks up a button and is assailed by a powerful vision of a violent murder. She hears a young woman as she is dying speak the name "Wychinsky". From experience, Sam knows this happened in the past, and begins checking out prior knife slayings in the area. Her investigation leads her to the knife slaying of a young woman, Catherine DeMarco. A young man, Jimmy Taggert, had been arrested for the murder when found asleep at the scene, was convicted and now seventeen years later, as Sam becomes caught up in this investigation, he awaits his imminent execution. Sam locates the detective who worked the case, but he's fallen into alcoholism and is still wallowing in self-pity because of past personal problems. He tells Sam that at the time, he thought the conviction of Jimmy Taggert was just too pat, too easy, and agrees to help her look into it one more time. But they don't have much time-execution day is almost upon them. As Sam digs more deeply into the lives of both Catherine and Jimmy, she's even more convinced the wrong person is about to be executed. Then another corpse is found, this one with documents pertaining to the Catherine DeMarco murder case in his possession. I found it most interesting that Sam Casey was pregnant while investigating this case, although that didn't seem to bother her at all except for some endearing food cravings. I also found the reactions of both Catherine's and Jimmy's parents maddening. Tooley has penned a remarkable story of Sam Casey's dogged determination against the odds of unscrambling deliberate disinformation, with the execution of an innocent man looming. This low-key police investigation with a bit of woo-woo added has a solid plot, good characters, and plenty of fair-play clues sprinkled throughout, although the readers won't notice them as quickly as they might have liked. A great relax-and-curl-up-by-the-fire mystery, noir and haunting in tone. A definite keeper. Review by: Beth Anderson author of SECOND GENERATIONS
