The application of the IMF orthodoxy of liberalization, stabilization, privatization, and restructuration has brought Russia a massive decline in production and income levels. Nikula (Finnish Centre for Russian and East European Studies, Helsinki) presents eight contributions in which sociologists examine the impact of this situation on the growing divergence of class structures in the late 1990s. The contributions follow the methodological principle in which the description of class positions is followed by an analysis of work and reproduction situations, which is then followed by an analysis of the social and political organization of social groups. Finally, the relationship of the social groups to state is examined. They argue that Russia is growing into a society characterized by a small and unstable elite in control of the power resources, a relatively small middle class with limited power, a large working class with limited power, and a growing underclass with no power whatsoever.
