Booknews
The first volume of a study commissioned by the United Nations University to investigate recent world-wide changes taking place in armed forces, arms industries, and all other military related activities. The study concludes that there is a fundamental transformation taking place in the nature of warfare: recent wars, unlike the classic Clausewitzean-era types, which were statist, autarchic, and totalizing, arise from the disintegration of state structures, and involve fewer soldiers and casualties. However, they are very disruptive in social terms, creating high unemployment and criminality, with a higher ratio of civilian to military casualties. This volume analyzes such issues as the distorted political, economic, and social relationships behind the new wars and the war economy characterized by a symbiosis between humanitarian assistance, growing criminality, and political extremism. It also suggests a basis for alternative forms of conflict prevention and resolution. Distributed by Books International. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
