Meet the Author

Andr�s Bello (1781-1865). Venezuela. Naci� en Caracas, Venezuela, el 29 de noviembre de 1781. Era hijo de Bartolom� Bello y Ana Antonia L�pez. Ingres� en el Seminario de Santa Rosa de Caracas en 1796 y termin� sus estudios en 1800, con el t�tulo de bachiller en artes. Estos estudios le dieron un excelente dominio del lat�n y del castellano y despertaron su inter�s por la filosof�a, la ciencia y las letras. Aprendi�, adem�s, ingl�s y franc�s. Por ese tiempo inici� tambi�n sus trabajos de investigaci�n ling��stica y filol�gica y termin� la primera versi�n de su An�lisis ideol�gico de los tiempos de la conjugaci�n castellana, publicado en 1841 en Valpara�so. En 1802 fue nombrado oficial segundo de la gobernaci�n de Venezuela, alcanzando el puesto de oficial mayor en 1810. En junio de ese a�o particip� en una mision enviada ante el gobierno brit�nico, integrada tambi�n por Bol�var y Luis L�pez M�ndez. Entre 1812 y 1822 trabaj� en Londres transcribiendo los manuscritos de Jeremy Bentham, y ofreciendo clases de franc�s y espa�ol. Tambi�n fue institutor de los hijos de William Richard Hamilton, subsecretario brit�nico de Relaciones Exteriores. En mayo de 1814, se cas� con Mary Ann Boyland, de veinte a�os, quien le dio tres hijos y muri� el 9 de mayo de 1821. Bello se cas� entonces con Elizabeth Antonia Dunn, tambi�n de veinte a�os y tuvo con ella doce hijos. En 1829 Bello se estableci� con su familia en Chile y ese mismo a�o fue nombrado oficial mayor del Ministerio de Hacienda. No ejerci� en ese ministerio, sino en el de Relaciones Exteriores. En 1837 fue elegido senador de la Rep�blica de Chile, ocupando ese cargo hasta 1864. Fue, adem�s, rector de la Universidad de Chile, puesto que ocup� hasta su muerte el 15 de octubre de 1865.
