Editorial Reviews

Amy Krouse Rosenthal
I loved The Retired Kid immediately…The story is told in a fluid, seemingly effortless manner. Neither showy nor dull, the text has that feeling of giving you the right words in the right order with the right pacing. Similarly, the illustrations entertain, explain and augment, but with sufficient white space and restraint.
—The New York Times
Publishers Weekly

"It's been a wonderful eight years... but I need a break," says Brian, exhausted from school, soccer and broccoli-eating. Toting golf clubs, he boards a plane to Florida. At the Happy Sunset Retirement Community, Brian plays cards, naps in undisturbed turquoise pools and learns that retirement entails "looking at hundreds of snapshots of Myrtle's grandchildren, or watching long documentaries on TV"; he frowns at early-morning yoga and gags on "prune juice smoothies." Drafted in crayony black line with daubs of gouache, Agee's (Milo's Hat Trick) orderly images of landscaped lawns, neat palm trees and low-rise condos ironically suggest a hushed relaxation antithetical to Brian's energy level. When a fellow retiree suggests Brian "think back to the good old days," the boy fondly recalls acing a math test, hitting the perfect note at a violin lesson and playing with his dog, then decides to come out of retirement. "I love my job!" he concludes. Agee has perfected the art of satire that is not only devoid of archness but even makes room for sympathy. Witty and fresh, yet not irreverent. Ages 4-8. (June)

Life can be tough when you are eight years old. There is school and chores, violin to practice, a dog to walk, and vegetables to eat. So young Brian decides to retire and heads for The Happy Sunset Retirement Community in sunny Florida. He meets a gregarious group of retirees and embarks on adventurous days of golf, fishing, and long afternoon naps. But all is not as it seems in retirement land and Brian soon tires of listening about hip replacements, looking at photos of beaming grandkids, and prune juice smoothies. Thinking it all over he waxes nostalgic for the "good old days" and makes up his mind to come out of retirement because as a kid, he loves his job. Agee's quirky, dry humor accompanied by his signature drawings rendered in watercolor and pencil tell a story that is bound to elicit chuckles for kids and adults alike. Each page is a small vignette with droll touches from the eccentric seniors to Brian with his pants hiked waist high. Grandparents will love sharing this with their children. Reviewer: Beverley Fahey

One day young Brian decides that he needs a break from his hard life as a kid. He flies off to the Happy Sunset Retirement Community in Florida. It has everything; Brian thinks he should have retired years ago. He enjoys the card games, golf, napping, and the pool. His new friend Harvey takes him fishing, to a ball game and the movies. But Brian soon tires of listening to the old folks and does not really appreciate some of the other activities. Harvey advises him to "think back to the good old days." He does, and some of them he remembers are pretty good. It may be hard work being a kid but he decides "I love my job!" and goes home. The colored illustrations of the occupations associated with being a kid versus retirement are boldly constructed with heavy black outlines and lightly applied paints, all designed to reinforce the sly humor. Our hero's reaction to "prune juice smoothies," his smirk on acing a math test, or the good-bye waves of the old folks as he leaves are all typical of Agee's deftly-drawn examples of the human condition. Brian's smile on the jacket standing in front of the palm trees and the residents of Happy Sunset sets the stage for a tale perhaps better appreciated by adults than youngsters. Gr 1-4- "It's hard work being a kid," what with school, and sports, and music lessons, and babysitting, and... and.... So Brian heads to Florida where he takes up residence at the Happy Sunset Retirement Community. The swimming pool, tennis courts, ball games, golf, and long afternoon naps convince the boy that he "should have retired years ago." But living in a retirement community also means listening to endless accounts of Tex's hip replacement surgery; yoga and knitting classes; and weekly medical check-ups. When he recalls his former triumphs at school and play, Brian decides to return home to the joy of his family and friends. Agee's signature cartoon illustrations, executed in pastel watercolors, greatly add to the fun. Brian's retiree friends sport sunglasses, flowered dresses and shirts, pink sneakers, a cane, and sagging chins. There are vignettes of Brian tangled in knitting, enduring "Friday-night swing dancing," and gagging on "prune juice smoothies." Children who have been pressured by school and extracurricular activities will identify with the protagonist and listen with relish to this tongue-in-cheek tale of his rebellion. But be warned. This story is so laugh-out-loud funny that you may have difficulty getting through it the first time. Another Agee triumph!-Marianne Saccardi, formerly at Norwalk Community College, CT

Kirkus Reviews
What happens when an eight-year-old boy decides being a kid is hard work and it's time to retire? Weary of school, soccer practice, violin class, voice lessons, dog-walking, little-sister-sitting and eating his vegetables, Brian announces he's retiring to the Happy Sunset Retirement Community in Florida. Initially, Brian thinks Happy Sunset is swell, with its swimming pool, tennis courts and snack bar. He enjoys playing cards, golfing, napping, fishing, going to ball games and watching movies with the Happy Sunset seniors. On the down side, Brian isn't keen on TV documentaries, weekly medical check-ups, swing-dancing, prune-juice smoothies and looking at photos of grandchildren. After three weeks of serious retirement, Brian's fed up with the geezer scene and wonders if his old job of being a kid is still available. Agee's signature, bland cartoon-like pencil-and-watercolor illustrations contrast Brian the kid with Brian the retiree hanging out with the grey-haired set to great effect. An amusing take on the "no place like home" theme. (Picture book. 4-8)
