Overview

Everybody dreams of a "golden retirement"--carefree times, financial security, good health, great weather. But without the proper planning, that dream can easily turn into a nightmare. Retiring Right was developed to provide you with all the facts you need to design your own individual retirement plan so that you can make your special dream a reality. Written by Dr. Lawrence J. Kaplan, one of this country's leading experts in the field of retirement planning, this highly practical, easy-to-understand book answers all your questions about savings and investment income, available tax shelters, the Social Security system, and so much more.

Each section covers a particular area of interest and concern, including lifestyle issues such as working, leisure, retirement housing, and care facilities; long-term retirement funding, including savings and investments, Social Security, pensions, and annuities; day-to-day financial considerations, such as budgeting, credit, inflation, and taxes; life insurance, health insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, and Medigap; and preparing for the inevitable through estate planning, wills, and trusts. All information reflects the latest laws and regulations so that you can take full advantage of the newest tax laws and maximize your retirement income.

Through personalized planning guides, self-tests, personal data forms, and worksheets, Retiring Right helps you apply successful retirement strategies to meet your individual needs. These handy guides allow you to easily and accurately assess your financial situation, select and implement the means by which you can achieve financial security, choose your retirement goals, and ultimately chart your own course towards years of happy retirement.

Lawrence J. Kaplan received his MA and PhD from Columbia University in New York City, and is Professor Emeritus of Economics at John Jay College of Criminal Justice CUNY. An authority in the field of financial management, Dr. Kaplan writes and lectures extensively on the subject of retirement planning.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This book should be purchased by any library that has requests for information on retirement. It is very well written and covers the complete range of retirement information for the layperson, including but not limited to social security, annuities, individual savings, the legal aspects of retirement, budgeting, pension benefits, Medicare and other health benefits, retirement housing, and estate planning. Each chapter has a glossary, and some chapters include ``important tips'' sections. An excellent personal and financial data form is included in the appendix. Resources of retiree organizations, education, legal services, and volunteer work and a ``reading list'' conclude this fine book. Arthur J. Lieb, Library of Congress
Booklist
Although he addresses some of the psychological aspects of retirement, Kaplan focuses on financial matters in his book. He addresses lifestyle issues like continuing to work and housing; long-term funding vehicles like savings, investments, and pensions; day-to-day financial concerns such as credit, budgeting, and inflation; life, health, and medical insurance; and "final facts" like estates, probate, and trusts. Kaplan retains the exact format of his most recent edition, but adds a section on retirement communities, updates appendices identifying additional resources, and revises information where new laws have been enacted. Given the difficulty in choosing among the many guide on retirement, the durability of Kaplan's manual makes it an attractive option.
