Overview

This latest book by Ian Baxter in the Images of War Series provides an absorbing insight into the German Army's retreat from the wastelands of the Eastern and Western Fronts to the very gates of a bombed and battered Berlin.

Wehrmacht, Waffen-SS, Luftwaffe, Hitlerjugend and Volksturm personnel attempted to defend every yard of ground against the overwhelming Allied forces. As the final months of the war are played out the reader learns how the Germans fought to the death in a desperate attempt to prevent what Hitler called the 'two fold devastation of the Reich'. Those German forces fortunate enough to survive the crushing ferocity of the enemy's ground and air onslaught gradually streamed back towards Berlin until they were eventually either destroyed or taken prisoner by the conquering Allied armies.

Using graphic and rare contemporary images accompanied by detailed captions and text, Retreat to Berlin vividly portrays the full measure of the desperate fighting and cost in human terms.
