Editorial Reviews

VOYA - C. Allen Nichols
A now grown child prodigy of the art world is being tormented by nightmares and visions that threaten to become real, and make her the next victim of a stalker who has brought her paintings to life. When she was a child Charlie used her artwork as a release from the hauntings, but the terror and the painting ended once a brain tumor was removed. Now, as a twentysomething, the horror has returned. Her former manager is desperate for money and will do almost anything to push Charlie into painting again in order to make some quick cash. Charlie must rely on family, friends, and a young former policeman (who becomes a love interest) to help her through the terror and save her from the stalker. Forrest has written an entertaining novel, but it lacks a sufficient level of suspense to garner a wide YA audience. The story line is somewhat predictable; the reader is able to ascertain the outcome of the various minor plot lines. In addition, the book opens choppily as the author attempts to provide background material dealing with Charlie's childhood and a number of characters. Unfortunately, this only adds confusion through the first quarter of the book. These objections aside, Retribution is the type of book that will grab YA readers and hold them through to the end-filled as it is with light suspense, romance, and low-level gore. Older YAs who enjoy adult suspense novels will find this a quick and easy read. VOYA Codes: 2Q 3P S (Better editing or work by the author might have warranted a 3Q, Will appeal with pushing, Senior High-defined as grades 10 to 12).
