Each of the 14 tracks is packed with an infectious punch -- a fresh sound that was foreshadowed by the whirling synth and droning kick drum of "New," which first appeared on the GO movie soundtrack. The influence of goth forerunners the Cure is also felt, particularly on the haunting "Home Now," with its Spanish horns, bolero guitar licks, and ska-tinged bass line. RETURN OF SATURN also reflects the band's evolution as musicians and Stefani's growth as a songwriter. The thoughtful ballads "Simple Kind of Life" and "Marry Me" show that the songbird is no longer content with being just a girl. She's a young woman pondering such issues as matrimony and motherhood. And don't let her pink hair, wonderfully breathy vocals, or nostalgic '80s pop references undercut what's going on here: This is the sound of a great pop band, almost all grown up.

Return of Saturn is an almost defiantly mature record about two things: Stefani's exploration of a troubled romance and her own romantic ideals, plus a serious attempt by the group to not only keep new wave alive, but to make that adolescent music relevant to an older audience. It's a high concept, but Return of Saturn is filled with satisfying contradictions. It's melodic, but deceptively complex; it can seem frothy, but it's never frivolous. No Doubt's desire to expand the emotional template of new wave is the perfect match for Stefani's themes -- she may be writing about love, but she's not writing adolescent love songs. Fragments of her teenaged romantic fantasies remain, but she's writing as a woman in her late 20s. She's tired of being another "ex-girlfriend" -- she wants to fall in love, get married, and have a family. It's a subject that's surprisingly uncommon in pop music, which would alone make Return of Saturn an interesting album. What makes it a successful one is that the band delivers an aural equivalent of Stefani's lyrical themes. They also begin with their adolescent musical ideals, adding depth and detail to their pop-ska foundation. They balance their non-ironic love of new wave with contemporary production and a sensibility borrowed from classic rock: that albums are greater than the sum of their parts. Surprisingly, they pull it off -- it's a far stronger record than Tragic Kingdom, even if the catchiest numbers don't have the same swagger and punch as their previous hit singles. So be it. With Return of Saturn, No Doubt have made a terrific, layered record that exceeds any expectations set by Tragic Kingdom. Not only have they found their voice, they know what to do with it.

    Deep, Dark , and Mellow

    I was totally surprised by this album. I had heard about it for years and then i just bought it for no reason. Every song on Return to Saturn is amazing. Starting with Six Feet Under and ending with Dark blue, it is just a very deep, dark, and mellow experience. The whole CD is just great to have and a great addition to my collection of CDs.

    i LUUUUUUUUUUUV this cd-

    this is my favorite no doubt cd of all 5 i own. my favorite song is bathwater, and i luuuuv the rest 2.

    RETURN OF SATURN IS INSANELY AMAZING

    The best Album yet....

    This album is so great. I believe that what's so capturing about it is, it's great mixture of music and lyrics. The lyrics are very relatable...i could relate to them, my friends could, and so could my mother...they are very touching and inspirational. The music is ''killer''. Even without the lyrics i could listen to this.Each and every song is different and unique from each other. No Doubt is so very different from other bands because you can tell the difference between each song (not all of them sound the same). The bass and drums mix together are so awesome.This album is the best one i own.

    One of the best this year

    If you want an album you can listen to straight through without stopping, Return of Saturn is it. No Doubt strays a little (but not alot) from its' ska roots and experiments with some trancy vibes. If you're a No Doubt fan from way back when, you'll love it.

    awsome... have to buy!

    this cd is amazing. my favorite cd that no doubt has released yet. every song has made me listen and learn. my fave song is ''Too Late'' but i also love them all.

    I kinda always knew I'd end up an Ex Fan

    Great album, but the sound is sooo....not ska. I have been in love with No Doubt since the first album! They had a Ska sound that was totally unique and all their own, but This one's different...kinda pop. I am giving this album 3 stars cuz I am not a biggie on pop, but it's still a good album if you are!

    I LOVE ***No dOuBt***

    this is an absolutely wonderful CD. if you like no doubt, which you should, you'll love this. rock, ska, reggae, new wave, pop, alternative... just a few of the genres No doubt has been grouped in and i think this CD does a superb job of showing every side. It took years to make and it was worth every minute. by the way, i love no doubt.

    I LOVE THIS BAND

    I love No Doubt..they're my fave..I'm the biggest fan...not to sound like a teenybopper. anyway, i really liked this album because the lyrics were great..very well thought. Gwen wrote about things in her life..things she knew. The guys are great. I went to their show..and..WOW..Keep up the great work

    No Doubt rocks!

    I love no Doubt, I mean Gwen Stefani is the perfect role model for young girls nowadays and the songs are awesome. Not to mention, she is the only girl who could ever pull off having pink hair.

    hey out there everyone! i am the biggest fan of no doubt! i have liked them since i was in the fifth grade and now i am in the nine grade. gwen is my role model and they have a great ability to write and perform together they are also original and awesome!

    Best Album Yet!Totally Awsome!!!!!

    OUT OF ALL OF THEIR C.D`S THIS HAS TO BE THE BEST ONE YET!!!!!THEY HAVE MATURED OVER THE LAST 5 YEARS!I THINK THAT ALL OF THE FANS THAT HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR 5 LONG YEARS FOR THIS ALBUM CAN SAY THAT IT WAS DEFFINITLY WORTH THE WAIT!!!!!!!!!!

    No Doubt has done it again

    I enjoyed Tragic Kingdom, but Return to Saturn is a definate improvement. The songs on this CD don't just sound nice, they also touch on the deeper feelings in everone of us. From 'Simple Kind of Life' (my favorite track) that tells about how all the simple things in life are too complicated, to 'Magic's in the Makeup' that talks about how the different faces we put on to impress people.

    Suprised

    After being disappointed with the new Bush album, I wasn't expecting much from this disc. I was pleasently suprised when I found that all 14 tracks are great. Such a different and far better sound then their last album.

    THE BEST CD EVER ! GWEN ROCKS!

    this cd is like the bomb because all the songs have a meaning and Gwen just says what she thinks. Rock(short for Raquel)
