All the King's Men - Book 5

3rd place - RWA Heart of the West contest

Assassin Gina Carano doesn't have time for love. In fact, the last thing she wants is a mate. But Gina can't stop thinking about Malek, the handsome AKM enforcer she met in Chicago. And now she's beginning to fear Malek's memory is the reason for her crippling panic attacks, which have assaulted her relentlessly since she left him.

Malek has never dealt with the centuries-old death of his first mate, but now that he's formed a new mating link to Gina, he has no choice. Stuck between the agony of mourning and the despair of being without Gina, his mind fractures as he attempts to reconcile the two halves of himself.

When Gina botches a hit on two vicious vampires in Miami, she reluctantly flees back to Chicago, where Malek must choose between the past and the future before he loses Gina forever.

This is Malek and Gina's story - both of them have mated before and lost their mates, through one reason or another. This is their second chance but will they both be too stubborn to take it? This book is both fantastic and horrible! It is full of historical abuse, psychotic episodes, trauma. And yet it is also full of hope, of love and of the promise of good things yet to come. With this storyline, we not only learn more about Malek and Gina, but also Trace, his brother Brak, and their father Maddox. Then there are the Drecks, Dracians and Thracians all thrown into the mix too. However, Ms Lynne's writing is such that you are never overloaded with information, but rather it all slots neatly into place, leaving you with a thrilling and emotion packed story. A fantastic addition to the series, leaving me wanting more... like now! Highly recommended. * I received this book from More Than Words Promotions in return for a fair and honest review. * Merissa Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books!

Malek and Gina's story is one of heartaches and brokeness, but they find healing in one another. New characters are introduced as well as my favorite characters from earlier books. This book made me fall in love with the series all over again and look forward to reading more.

Grab your kleenex and something to are going to need them when you read this book. I am not sure about the rest of you.......but, I went through many emotions reading this book. I love reading the series; you fall in love with all the characters. Yes, it is true.....Malek was not one of my favorites; especially the way he treated the opposite sex. Once his story was told, I had a better understanding of the pain he was going through, BUT that doesn't pardon his actions. I love Gina....she is a kick ass female. I felt so bad for her.....she is always getting the dirty end of the stick. She has been through a lot as well. Something is happening to Gina.....but she isn't sure what. She is getting panic attacks at the most unappropriate of times. Not just any panic attacks, but knock you on your ass, completely taking over you body attacks. Why is this happening to her? Doesn't she have enough to deal with? Is it possible that someone at AKM might know how to help her? After botching an assignment.....she decides she needs to come to Chicago and visit AKM territory. Read on and find out what happens. I promise you won't be dissapointed! If you love the other books in the series, I think you will enjoy this one too! -Intrigued by Romance

Disappointed. I loved the first books in the series and had high hopes for this book. The secondary characters that we've already met are fantastic, and the new characters introduced are going to be great to follow in future books. My main problem with this book is that I loathe Malek. Without giving away any spoilers, I can not understand what made him forgivable or redeemable. This guy is a sociopath at best. In addition, there are a couple of mutilation/torture scenes in the book that I had to skip. It sounds like the next book (Trace) is a long ways into the future which is a shame. It's a great series, but I wish I had skipped this book.

I liked this book. I hate to say anything bad about this at all because of how much I love this series, but there were a few things I didn't like. The whole mating bond and sappy love seemed a bit much in this one. The scenes between Malek and Gina just felt a little overdone. All the other books balanced the strong emotional mating with normalcy, but this one was just a little too over dramatic. What I did love was reading about some of the other characters from previous books. It always feels good to revisit from books that you love, which I did. What I didn't like so much was the way everything seemed unfinished. I get that there will be another book in the series (which I am anxiously awaiting, I am obsessed with Trace and now want even more of his story, along with his family), but I feel that there should be more closure in each book and this left it wide open. It wouldn't be so bad if I could jump right in to the next book, but considering how long this one took to come out, who knows when the next will be released. Overall, it was a solid addition to the AKM series. I fell in love with the team from book one and it just kept getting better with each book. With the many various characters who appear in each book, this is a series that could go on forever and delve in deep to a supernatural culture that I can't get enough of. I also hope to read more along the lines of Ari and Sev's mating. :-) Hopefully the next addition won't keep me waiting too long! 300+ pgs.

I love Donya Lynne because she always provides multiple POVs from different characters in her books, not just one. I enjoy reading from the 'bad guy/girl' POV as well as the hero and heroine. Her AKM series is such a fantastic hit because her vampires are different from the normal vampire stories you usually get. They are not invincible, they hurt, suffer, bleed, love, eat, sleep, fight etc. This book had all of that, all of the characters from previous books were seen throughout the book, plus some new characters were introduced as well. Malek's character was very annoying at first, his behavior was boorish and disgusting, and his inner monologues were so repetitive, they just got on my nerves. Its usually the female lead that gets on my nerves but this time around it was the male lead. I've always liked Gina's character, a bad ass assassin, who had a lot of traumatic crap happen to her but she bounced back and man what a freaking come back! I can't wait for Trace's book and finally see him reunited with his father and brother! SR

I have been enjoying Donya Lynne's books so far even though there are a lot of similarities to J R Ward's BDB series. There are enough differences to keep them from being knock offs but still close.

4.25 stars:  RETURN OF THE ASSASSIN is the fourth full length storyline in Donya Lynne’s paranormal vampire series focusing on the vampires who work for AKM and the women  (and men) they love.  This is Malek and Gina’s storyline and one with heartbreaking and painful pasts that each must accept and endure to get on with their lives. Malek’s first mate was murdered and he has had a difficult time overcoming the painful memories and thoughts about retribution and death-something broke inside Malek and he was floundering in despair. And no amount of booze or sex brought any relief including the thoughts of Gina Carano and the ‘who and what’ she was about. Gina was an enigma and Malek’s thoughts continued to return to the woman who would one day be his mate-but the overriding guilt of losing his first mate had placed Malek in a position where he pushed everyone and everything away including Gina. When male vampires go into their needing nothing can stop the rush of aggression and the need for sex and nothing was stopping Malek and his possessive instincts to protect the woman he both needed and despised. Gina’s painful past, history with the AKM and heartbreaking guilt fueled much of the character development and relationship between she and Malek.  Malek’s character and personality bordered on sociopathic at times but in the end, he will realize that the only thing holding him back was the guilt and the memories of a life he could not save. The AKM needed Gina because without her, Malek would probably not survive. Donya Lynne continues to build on the cobalt addictions and Drek premise as the relationship and intensions between Bishop and Apostle become dark and more dangerous.  There is a new bad boy in town and he is out to make the lives of the vampires at AKM a living h*ll.  Donya also introduces the half-blood Dacians-a species that the AKM believed no longer existed-but to everyone’s surprise, the Dacians have returned just as powerful and aggressive as before.  There is also a developing story with Kota and his history with both Sev and Gina makes for some interesting plot points. Return of the Assassin is another eye opening and fascinating addition to Donya’s All The King’s Men paranormal series.  The relationship between Malek and Gina was both difficult and aggressive but in the end, Malek will fall hard for the woman he would call his mate. Donya has written a passionate storyline about two people who have loved and lost and who will one day love again. Copy supplied by the author.

Was wiping tears several times the interactions were so meaningful and heartfelt that it took you into the emotions felt by the characters. Wonderful addition to the Series. I have read each book in the "All the Kings Men" Series multiple times and they are all wonderfully written and they all tug at your heartstrings and make you fall in love with the characters. Plus it leaves you sitting on the edge of you seat impatiently waiting for the next book to come out. Would highly recommend not only this book but the whole series.

I absolutely love the AKM series. I always love that even though the story is about a specific couple of characters, you get a glimpse into the other AKM characters as well. Bring on the next book, I am in need of more Trace, Brak, Maddox, Sam & of course the Navy eyed Dom Micah.

The All The Kings Men series is a remarkable series! I became addicted when I read Rise Of The Fallen, Micah’s incredible story. Every book in the series seems to be better and better! Donya is a true talent! Malek and Gina’s story is so exciting, sexy and suspenseful. She is lost in guilt and he is lost in his memories. This is a wonderful ride to hope and see if they can find what they both need and stay alive in their journey. Hang on tight! Exceptional characters, sizzling scenes, ultimate danger is coming! Donya will have to dig deep to top this book, but she has great material to expand on with Trace…..whew!!!! I highly recommend Return Of The Assassin, I suggest that you read the entire series. You won’t be sorry!
