Overview

Barnaby Grimes isa tick-tock lad, running errands in his city, day and night, and high-stacking around the rooftops in search of new mysteries to solve. This is a fantastic romp through a Dickensian-style city, with a wonderful new hero in the guise of Barnaby.

After collecting a strange parcel from a deserted ship in the fog of the docks, and delivering it to the local schoolmaster, Barnaby thinks he’s earned a moment to sit on the rooftops and eat his favorite pastry. But soon he realizes that all is not well at the school—but is the problem quite as he expects it? A gruesome tale of a school overrun by a terrible curse—who will survive?

Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell are the creators of the bestselling Edge Chronicles series and the Far-Flung Adventures.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Barnaby Grimes is a tick-tock man or clerk errant; in other words, he is a paid messenger. Unlike the "cobblestone creepers" who must travel by streets, as a highstacker, Barnaby travels from roof to roof among the chimney stacks. His acrobatic abilities are enhanced by the yinchido training he receives from the laundry owner's beautiful granddaughter, Mei Ling. Yinchido is an ancient art that allows Barnaby to see through the empty spaces, a skill that enables him to be victorious in a subsequent battle with the evil spirit of the emerald skull. The adventure begins when Barnaby promptly delivers a package to Mr. Barnett, the headmaster of the prestigious school, Grassington Hall. Mr. Barnett, a collector of stuffed rare birds, hires Barnaby to collect the Catincatapetl, an exquisite specimen arriving on a ship. The descending fog that appears as Barnaby approaches the ship is disturbing, but he is not suspicious until he later reads that the ship's crew vanished. He then learns that all is not well at Grassington Hall. The boys have become quite violent, the masters are bound and held prisoner, and the school is being destroyed. Barnaby realizes that he delivered much more than a rare bird. Instead, the package contained the emerald skull through which Catincatapetl, the ancient jungle god of darkness, controls the minds of the boys. Barnaby must draw on all of his skills to save the school. This short, fast-paced, page-turning novel is an easy read that will thrill young readers who love high adventure. Riddell's black and white illustrations add to the enjoyment. Reviewer: Shirley Nelson

Gr 5-8

"Cut out his beating heart-and give it to me" a voice commands Barnaby Grimes in the opening chapter of this roller-coaster ride of horror. The Grassington Hall School headmaster has asked Barnaby, a tick-tock lad who leaps across 19th

century English rooftops to make and pick up deliveries, to fetch an exotic stuffed bird that will arrive in a crate by boat. Shortly thereafter, he learns that the students at the school have become violent, bloodthirsty, and intent on sacrifice. He finds himself in the middle of the melee and is finally able to track the trouble back to the bird-the Catincatapetl-named after a Toltec demon god. In the end, he is able to restore order using special concentration powers that his friend Mei Ling has taught him. Foreshadowing livens up the pace for most of the story and will keep young readers guessing until the final twist. Riddell's line drawings are woven throughout, and the silhouettes at the end of each chapter spice up the text with occasional subtle humor and added layers of meaning--James K.
