A Reunion to Die For: A Joshua Thornton Mysteryby Lauren Carr
In A Reunion to Die For, author Lauren Carr continues to follow Joshua Thornton while he brings justice to the small West Virginia town of his youth that he returned to with his five children after the death of his wife. Chester, West Virginia, is a quaint, but far from quiet, town. Here, everyone knows everyone and nearly everyone has a secret. Some are dying, while others are killing to keep their secrets undercover.
As a naïve teenager, Joshua Thornton had no reason to question the authorities who had concluded that his dear friend Tricia Wheeler, after breaking up with her boyfriend, had committed suicide. However, 21 years later, as Hancock County’s Prosecuting Attorney, Joshua is forced to examine the closed case when former schoolmate and current adversary, Gail Reynolds, returns to town to pen an investigative book on Tricia’s “murder”. Joshua reluctantly agrees that the pieces of Tricia’s suicide don’t add up, and an investigation is warranted.
When Grace Henderson, another seemingly innocent teenage girl, is murdered by a close gun shot to the chest, it is impossible for Joshua to ignore the similarities the girls and their deaths share. Surely the murders of two teenage cheerleaders 21 years apart couldn’t be any more than coincidental… could they? As the investigations into the two deaths unfold, Joshua finds more questions than answers, more enemies than friends, and more victims than clues. Thornton must use every ounce of his integrity, ingenuity, and tight circle of close friends while he scrambles to solve the two murders that has nearly everyone around him becoming either suspect or victim… including himself!

Was the twenty year old death of a cheerleader suicide or murder? Gail Reynolds, a journalist and classmate of Joshua Thornton's comes to town to write a book proving the latter. Apparently not everyone is glad to see her. When another cheerleader is killed in a similar manner, interest in the old murder is renewed. But the killings don't stop there. Among those who become victims is Rex Rollins, after he's announced that he has written a tell-all book, and when Gail is found dead, Joshua may well have been the last to see her alive, other than her killer, but he becomes a strong suspect. As the newly elected county prosecutor, he now finds that he has to solve the mystery that¿s fallen over his town. Joshua has to combat the personalities in the police and detective department as well as the people he calls friends, and of course, those he for which he feels no affection, only contempt. Lauren Carr's mystery series featuring widower Joshua Thornton and his five children is a resounding success. I'll be watching for the next book. Review by Wanda C. Keesey
In 1984 in Chester, West Virginia, her mother coming home from work and discovered the murdered corpse of teenager Tricia Wheeler the killer was never caught. Two decades later at the upcoming high school reunion, investigative reporter Gail Reynolds announces she will write a true crime book on the unsolved Wheeler case. Hancock County prosecutor widower Joshua Thornton is unhappy with the proclamation as he expects to be painted badly in spite of being a student at the time by Reynolds who seems to loathe him. However, the single father of four has no time to brood besides raising his brood someone murdered a cheerleader Grace Henderson with the crime emulating the Wheeler homicide. Soon afterward, Gail is killed, but hot shot police detective Seth Cavanaugh believes Joshua killed the two females and probably Wheeler too. Other killings follow. --- This is an entertaining police procedural legal thriller with a terrific final twist that insures justice occurs. Joshua is a delightful protagonist who struggles with a difficult case already personal made even harder when he becomes the prime suspect. Although some of the resolution comes out of nowhere, mystery readers will want to attend A REUNION TO DIE FOR. --- Harriet Klausner
A Reunion to Die For: A Joshua Thornton Mystery by Lauren Carr 4 STARS I admit I have enjoyed lauren's murder mysteries. They are complicated, lots of murder suspects that keep you guessing on who did what murders and why. I usually am able to figure out part but not all the answers. The characters are a mixed bag. Some you love, some you love to hate and hope they are the guilty party. This is the second Joshua Thornton mystery book. I do like the newer one better but this one kept me reading to find out all the answers. Joshua is the new proscuter for the county. He is a widower with 5 kids and one dog. He has moved his family back to his hometown. His cousin Tad is a dr. and medical examiner. They are good friends and work close together on some cases. Joshua has a lot of ladies chasing him some from high school, some are even lawyers. He does not understand it. A cheerleader is shot to death after practice. His son chases down the killer but he doesn't catch him. A new detective is hired and put in charge of the other detectives. Joshua is not impressed with him at all. He even checks him out. Sean jumps to conclusions without asking all the questions than trys to make his case fit. He tries to arrest Joshua for murder of an old friend who he slept with once back in high school. Gail has been stocking him and he did not even know it. Joshua opens a old case that had another high school cheerleader he was friends back in the day with. It was ruled a sucide even when the evidence proves it was not. Beside the fact thier was no gun left at the scene. The story takes twists and turns all over the place till everything is revealed. I like Joshua and hope to read more books with him as the main character in the future. I was given this ebook to read in exchange of honest review by Lauren.
