Library JournalThis heavy volume was created when Reuters harvested photographs shot in the 21st century by 227 of the news agency's photographers from 70 countries, then added essays by nine Reuters writers. News can be made in an instant and shot by a photographer, then shown to many people in many places. Or, photojournalism may be a longer look at the event—before, during, and after—lingering to enhance a print or spoken story. At their best, news or background shots will have the punch to inform and even emblemize an event or situation. Though a pretentious title mars this book—which, despite its size, can only give a whiff of the world, not its state—there is enough horror, violence, celebrity, savage religion, absurdity, and the bizarre—along with enough powerful, ruthless, weak, and dead people—to build a good case for pessimism. A glorious collection of 537 well laid-out color images, joined by a sufficient amount of text, build a good book and the notion that, too often, the 21st century appears to be on fire. Recommended.
