REVELATION 1 CHAPTER HIGHLIGHTS Read, Hear, and Keep Ruler of All Rulers Alpha and Omega Seven Lampstands Our High Priest He Holds the Keys Let's Get Started Since we will be studying Revelation, it is important to understand what a revelation is. The wordrevelation comes from the Greek word apokalupsis. It means the uncovering, the unveiling, or the disclosing. Revelation is the disclosing of Jesus Christ. It can be taken two ways: as the revealing of the person of Jesus Christ, or as the revealing of what he intends to do starting with the Church Age and running through to the end of time. The Church Age is that period of time that the Church is on earth. The Church consists of the followers of Jesus Christ, as opposed to a church which is a building where people meet to worship. The Church Age started fifty days after Jesus was raised from the dead on the Jewish holy day called Pentecost (The Feast of Weeks). It will end when the Church is raptured. Just as one week is divided into seven days, the Church Age is divided into seven periods (more on this later in Chapter 1). John, one of Christ's original twelve disciples, was selected by Jesus to record Revelation. Since he knew Jesus personally, John is often called the Apostle John. He never boasted of that, but simply called himself a servant of Jesus (one who is in the service of God). GO TO: Exodus 34:22, 23 (Pentecost) Acts 2: 1-47 (Pentecost) I Corinthians 15:52 (rapture) Acts 1:21-26 (Apostle John) What? revelation - an uncovering of something hidden Rapture - the Church is taken to heaven at Christ's return apostle - someone commissioned by God to represent Christ Revelation 1:1 The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, Don't Jump Ahead!

Fabulous book in helping me understand Revelation!

I really loved this book. Revelation is such a complicated text for the lay person and I found this book to be clear in its explanation of what the verses and symbolism means. I used this book in unison with another so that I could compare the different views on what the symbolism refers to. There will always be debate about what Revelation means and I found it helpful to compare two different views while I was reading through. I found this book to be a great starting point for my deeper study of the book of Revelation.

Good popular hermeneutics but quite a stretch

This work fails to bring several things into consideration, one of which is the histrorical background of the text. As the reader of this commentary goes through the explanations offered by the author for each of the verses in the book of Revelation, he/she must wonder how the believers of the 1st century, to whom this letter was actually written, would have ever understood what John was writing. The book of Revelation was a letter written by John to the seven, real churches in Asia Minor and was meant to be something that they would surely understand. However, I beleive that this commentary on the book of Revelation would have even left John scratching his head in bewilderment. First we must understand the context in order to understand the symbolism. Then we can discover the spiritual and timeless truths contained within the book, namely that the Christian has ultimate joy and hope even in the face of the most severe persecution. John's letter was addressed to 1st century believers about 1st century issues and people, it was not written directly to 21st century Christians about specific 21st century issues and people. Understand the context, and unlock the true revelation.
