PreS-2 --All one needs to outdo one's friends, it seems, is a bit of magic here and there, namely in the form of a green pickle wand. The Magic Chicken is sure he can tone down his braggart friends, the Wizard and the Fairy, with just such a tool and a chant to go with it. As luck would have it, though, his spell-making backfires in a flurry of confusion, and the Magic Chicken is left in a heap in the laps of his friends. When all is back to normal, he gives a round of genuine hugs and is told by the Wizard and the Fairy that ``you can be friendly and nice sometimes.'' Watercolor illustrations abound with witty details and exuberant action, adding verve to a story already full of humor. The meshing of manageable text and engaging illustrations provides a visual treat from cover to cover. All listeners (and readers) will revel in the antics of these three zany friends, but the book is better suited to small-group or one-on-one reading. Even a magic wand will not keep this one on the shelf. --Mary Lou Budd, Milford South Elementary School, OH
