Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Nishad J. Nadkarni, MD (Rush University Medical Center)
Description: This book presents a salient and timely overview of major concepts in psychiatry, from theory through treatment. It purports to serve as an accompaniment for medical students completing their psychiatry core clerkship.
Purpose: The book primarily attempts to provide a readable, user-friendly resource for medical students in preparation for their miniboard psychiatry exams as well as to aid in their understanding of major psychaitric concepts in rounds and on the floors. Material helpful for other psychaitry and behavioral neurology electives is also included.
Audience: Although the editor feels the primary target for this work is medical students, it is written at an appropriate level for residents and even practicing psychiatristrs who wish to refresh their understanding of different concepts in psychiatry. Mental health trainees in different disciplines preparing for board exams will find this text useful.
Features: In a portable, user-friendly format, this book divides psychiatry into four broad areas of study, each of which could provide enough material to stand on its own. Chapters in each section are written by authors who are educators in their respecitve fields, and the writing style strikes a unique balance between completeness and attention to detail. Although more illustrations would be helpful, language taken from the DSM as well as several algorithms augment the readable and approachable text.
Assessment: Rarely does an introductory textbook present itself in such a useable, comprehensive style that can find use in so many contexts. This book does a magnificent job of succinctly but comprehensively introducing virtually all major topics of inquiry in psychiatry in an easy-to-read format. Besides being useful for medical students, other practitioners and trainees in the field of mental health will find this book a welcome addition to their libraries.
