Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Maureen A. Smith, MS, RN, APN-RC(Rush University Medical Center)
Description: This is a comprehensive overview of sleep medicine with chapters written by sleep researchers on normal sleep as well as the pathophysiology, identification, and management of all the major sleep disorders.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a thorough review of sleep medicine. It is a dense text that includes an entire section of practice exam questions that are especially relevant for those preparing to take the American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM) exam. It also includes an access code for additional online content, including 600 more interactive questions with answers.
Audience: Although targeted at physicians who are preparing to take the ABSM certification exam, the book is also a useful resource for other healthcare professionals who serve clients in a medical setting that treats sleep disorders. The editors are authorities in their respective fields of neurology and pulmonary/critical care medicine and are both board certified in sleep medicine. Dr. Avidan is director of the UCLA Sleep Disorders Center and Dr. Barkoukis is the program director of the sleep medicine fellowship program at the University of Nebraska.
Features: The book is organized into three sections with two appendixes and an index. Section 1, entitled "Highlights of Sleep Medicine," provides a compendium of the requisite content on the sleep board exam. It includes chapters on normal sleep, interpretation of polysomnography (PSG), physiology, neurobiology, all of the major sleep disorders, the effects of drugs on sleep, and pediatric sleep. Section 2, on practice exams, consists of 23 chapters of sample board exam questions that provide a detailed analysis of the reasoning behind the correct answers. Section 3 includes contact information for professional sleep organizations, a listing of accredited sleep medicine fellowship programs and organizations that provide continuing medical education (CME) credit, as well as appropriate sources for patient education materials.
Assessment: This is a pandect on sleep medicine. It undoubtedly ranks as one of the best test preparation guides for those who are preparing to take the ABSM exam.
