Revolucion!: Cuban Poster Art

With an introduction illuminating the rich social and artistic history of the posters, and rare biographical information on the artists themselves, this striking volume offers a window into the story of Cuba—and a truly revolutionary chapter in graphic design.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
As a Cuban immigrant, Cushing brings a personal commitment to Cuban poster art, which he has spent the last 20 years cataloging, preserving, and bringing to public attention. The author, who was given access to the Cuban national archives, has assembled here the largest collection available of Cuban poster art from the mid-1960s to 1980. The introduction captures the spirit of Cuban culture under Fidel Castro, where the "golden age" of poster art flourished with the help of government funding. Artists like Eduardo Bachs and Ren Mederos are just a few of the influential artists who developed stylistic signatures and reflected a focus on Cuban national pride and international solidarity against foreign domination. These posters are particularly poignant in content and visual impact. With more than 150 colorful illustrations on heavy bond paper, this beautifully designed book is divided into five chapters covering such topics as national pride, sports and health, and solidarity and revolution. It also contains a list of artists with page numbers, a valuable three-page bibliography, and an index by poster title. There is little else available on this fascinating topic; highly recommended for all collections.-David A. Berona, Univ. of New Hampshire Lib., Durham Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

New Insight into Cuban Poster Art

After the Cuban revolution artists were employed by the government to produce posters for the new social order. Working with few resources, they created a distinctive style of poster art that influenced popular art throughout the world. Mr Cushing's book includes examples of the work and brief biographies of some of the artists. In many instances the images transcend the utilitarian nature of the work. For those interested in the history of art or graphic design, Revolucion is a welcome addition.
