Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
The "It Works!" series introduces middle readers to advances in world-changing technology, mixing history with profiles of discoverers and inventors and adding simple experiments related to each. In this volume, readers meet researchers who have pioneered in space technology to bring us rockets, boosters, satellites, lunar modules, the Manned Maneuvering Unit, and inspiration through science fiction. Each scientist is pictured in a color drawing at the intense moment of discovery with revelatory thoughts in balloons, then informally with an amusing cartoon and brief information about the work. Two following pages offer illustrated directions for an experiment kids can do and a colorful look at the future of the new technology. Space researchers include William Congreve (born in 1772), who turned fireworks into weapons and inspired the lyrics of "The Star Spangled Banner." The related page shows a modern homemade rocket that competed in a rocketry contest. Also dramatic is the story of Wernher von Braun, former Nazi scientist who came to the U.S. and developed the Saturn rocket that took Apollo astronauts to the moon. An experiment uses flour and small objects to simulate the moon's surface. Futurist Robert L. Forward's books show how scientists find innovative ideas in literature. Browsers can have fun discovering some highlights of each field; an amusing timeline at the end bounces readers through them in chronological order. Any of the characters or their stories could spark further research by interested space explorers. Reviewer: Barbara L. Talcroft
School Library Journal
Gr 3-5– In these introductions, six four-page chapters include stories about the inventions or discoveries, biographies of the person(s) involved, simple science experiments related to the inventions, and short narratives about the current use of the items. Speech bubbles designed to convey the scientists’ comments flow from the painting of the featured person. Information in them is sometimes vague. Some of the textual statements suffer from the same affliction as a result of oversimplification, while some facts are incorrect. Construction, for example, discusses flat shapes, which are not defined, and it is not clear as to how “Towers are drilled into rock or concrete blocks” when building a suspension bridge. Space leads readers to believe that Russian scientist Sergei Korolev launched Sputnik I by himself. Also, the random arrangement of topics can be confusing. After an abrupt ending, a bubble-type time line, which includes information that is not in the texts, concludes each volume. A disappointing series.
