Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carol Raker Collins
Written and laid out as if it were a newspaper, this large illustrated book chronicles four major and a number of minor revolutions. The story of the American Revolution includes a report of the 1773 Boston Tea Party, an interview with Paul Revere, a letter from Tom Paine, an account of the signing of the Declaration of Independence as told by Thomas Jefferson, etc. It covers historical events up to the end of the war in 1783 and to the beginning of a new government in 1789 when George Washington became president. Interspersed throughout are ads, illustrations, and photos to authenticate the story. The French, Russian, and Chinese Revolutions are similarly documented, along with a summation of other uprisings around the world inspired by the French Revolution. A time line at the end of the book provides a good synopsis. With some tongue-in-cheek writing, this is generally an even-handed rendition of topics that could be incendiary. The newspaper format is quite appealing, especially with its colored illustrations and interesting layout. This would be a good introduction for students to topics that could be explored further in discussion.
